Complications and mortality of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease: a global systematic review and meta-analysis

Christian S. Marchello et al.

Summary: Complications are frequent in non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease, and the mortality rate is approximately 15%. Clinicians, particularly in African countries, should be aware of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease as a cause of severe febrile illness. Prompt diagnoses and management decisions, including empiric antimicrobial therapy, would improve patient outcomes. Additionally, investments in improving clinical microbiology facilities to identify non-typhoidal salmonella, as well as research efforts towards vaccine development and non-vaccine prevention measures, would prevent illness and death associated with non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease.

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever: a clinical seminar

Abi Manesh et al.

Summary: Enteric fever caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi remains a significant infectious disease in Asia and Africa, with the highest prevalence reported in the Indian subcontinent. The emergence of widespread antimicrobial resistance has limited treatment options for travel-related EF, highlighting the importance of improving diagnosis, hygiene, and vaccination. Efforts to control typhoid include early detection of resistance, therapy with appropriate drugs, provision of safe drinking water, and vaccination among travellers and locals. improved vaccines against Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A are needed to enhance control measures.

Richard Pfeiffer's typhoid vaccine and Almroth Wright's claim to priority

John D. Williamson et al.

Summary: Richard Pfeiffer conducted laboratory-based studies on cholera and typhoid fever, leading to the discovery of bacterial endotoxin and understanding of protective immune responses. Almroth Wright developed a typhoid vaccine after consulting with Pfeiffer, but later claimed precedence in introducing anti-typhoid vaccination. However, it was ultimately shown that Pfeiffer was the first to provide an account of human typhoid vaccination.

Genetic diversity of Salmonella Paratyphi A isolated from enteric fever patients in Bangladesh from 2008 to 2018

Sadia Isfat Ara Rahman et al.

Summary: The study utilized whole genome sequencing to reveal the genetic structure of S. Paratyphi A in Bangladesh, finding that the majority of isolates belonged to the dominant global lineage A and carried single point mutations associated with decreased fluoroquinolone susceptibility. The genomic data also indicated a close relationship between isolates from the region and neighboring countries in South Asia.

Engineering a Novel Bivalent Oral Vaccine against Enteric Fever

Annelise Soulier et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel bivalent oral vaccine to protect against enteric fever caused by Salmonella serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A. By genetically engineering the attenuated S. Typhi ZH9 strain to introduce S. Paratyphi A immunogenic elements, a new vaccine candidate was created. This new bivalent vaccine is now being tested in a Phase I clinical trial.
