A chimeric hemagglutinin-based universal influenza virus vaccine approach induces broad and long-lasting immunity in a randomized, placebo-controlled phase I trial

Raffael Nachbagauer et al.

Summary: New influenza virus vaccines based on chimeric hemagglutinin have been found to induce a broad, strong, durable and functional immune response targeting the conserved stalk of the hemagglutinin protein. This suggests that these chimeric hemagglutinins have the potential to be developed as universal vaccines that protect broadly against influenza viruses.

A Strategy to Elicit M2e-Specific Antibodies Using a Recombinant H7N9 Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine Expressing Multiple M2e Tandem Repeats

Daria Mezhenskaya et al.

Summary: Influenza viruses remain a serious public health problem, with seasonal influenza vaccines showing low effectiveness against drifted and new viruses. Research is ongoing to develop strategies to elicit immune responses against conserved parts of influenza virus proteins. A study constructing a universal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) candidate with enhanced breadth of protection showed promising results in increasing protection against heterosubtypic challenge viruses compared to classical LAIV. Further investigation in pre-clinical and clinical trials is warranted.

Development and Evaluation of an Ebola Virus Glycoprotein Mucin-Like Domain Replacement System as a New Dendritic Cell-Targeting Vaccine Approach against HIV-1

Zhujun Ao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of a new DC-targeting vaccine approach against HIV-1, showing that immunization with VLPs and rVSVs containing a fusion protein composed of Ebola virus GP and HIV C2-V3-C3 polypeptides could induce robust immune responses against HIV-1 in mice. The results provide proof of concept for this efficient vaccine platform in delivering antigenic polypeptides of HIV-1 to prevent viral infections.
