Whole-Genome Phylogenetic Analysis Reveals a Wide Diversity of Non-O157 STEC Isolated From Ground Beef and Cattle Feces

Sebastian Gutierrez et al.

Summary: The study sequenced 62 STEC isolated in Chile and found that Chilean STEC are not phylogenetically related to STEC from the rest of the world. While distinct molecular markers of local STEC were not identified, the results suggest the presence of local emerging STEC with unique features.

Molecular characterization and prevalence of virulence factor genes of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) isolated from diarrheic children

Mohammad Moeinirad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of STEC in diarrheic children samples from Iran, identifying various Shiga toxin subtypes, serotypes, major virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance genes. It was found that the variation in virulence factor profiles leads to differences in STEC pathogenesis, and high cytotoxicity with antibiotic resistance in STEC isolates should be considered as a warning to public health.

Genetic diversity and pathogenic potential of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) derived from German flour

Michaela Projahn et al.

Summary: A study in Germany characterized 123 STEC strains isolated from flour and flour products, revealing a high diversity of serotypes, including potentially high pathogenic serotypes. While STEC-contaminated flour products have not been epidemiologically linked to human clinical cases, the study showed that flour can serve as a vector for transmitting STEC strains with high pathogenic potential. Further investigation is needed to determine the sources of STEC contamination in flour and flour products, particularly for these rare serotypes.
