Investigating dairy microbiome: an opportunity to ensure quality, safety and typicity

Ilario Ferrocino et al.

Summary: A detailed understanding of the microbiome of cheese and dairy products is crucial for optimizing their flavor, appearance, quality, and safety. High-throughput sequencing can greatly enhance the ability to track and understand the function and interaction of microorganisms. The interaction between dairy-associated microbial communities and the gut microbiome can have implications for human health. Therefore, studying the role, origin, diversity, and function of microbial species in dairy production can help improve processes and outcomes.

Phosphate-solubilising microorganisms for improved crop productivity: a critical assessment

Nelly S. Raymond et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that while phosphate-solubilising microorganisms have positive effects on plant growth under controlled conditions, field experiments do not always demonstrate the same positive responses. The mechanisms observed in vitro do not necessarily translate into improved crop phosphorus nutrition in complex soil-plant systems. Therefore, the current concept of PSM function may not provide a reliable strategy for increasing crop phosphorus nutrition.

Experimental evidence of microbial inheritance in plants and transmission routes from seed to phyllosphere and root

Ahmed Abdelfattah et al.

Summary: The study found that the seed microbiome is diverse, with the microbial composition in leaves and embryos showing similarity, while roots and pericarps have less diverse and distinct microbial communities. The establishment of root and leaf communities involves inheritance, niche differentiation, and different transmission routes.

Dietary Fiber and Its Source Are Associated with Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Korean Adults

SuJin Song et al.

Summary: In Korean adults, higher intake of dietary fiber and fruit fiber was found to be inversely associated with metabolic syndrome in men, while higher fruit fiber intake was linked to reduced prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in women. Total fruit and whole fruit consumption was inversely associated with obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic syndrome in men, as well as hypertension in women. The findings suggest that the amount and sources of fiber play a role in the prevalence of metabolic diseases in Korean adults.

Advances in Microbiome Research for Animal Health

Raquel S. Peixoto et al.

Summary: Host-associated microbiomes play a crucial role in maintaining the homeostasis of the metaorganism by providing nutrition, aiding growth and development, protecting against pathogens, and more. Understanding the diversity and importance of animal microbiomes can lead to the development of microbe-based therapies to promote animal health and sustainable husbandry practices. Threats associated with animal biodiversity loss, microorganism extinction, and emerging diseases like the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the need for further research and conservation efforts in this area.

Domestication affects the composition, diversity, and co-occurrence of the cereal seed microbiota

Yulduzkhon Abdullaeva et al.

Summary: The diversity of seed microbiota was generally higher in cultivated cereals than in wild ancestors, suggesting that domestication lead to a bacterial diversification. On the other hand, more microbe-microbe interactions were detected in wild species, indicating a better-structured, mature community. Typical human-associated taxa, such as Cutibacterium, dominated in cultivated cereals, suggesting an interkingdom transfers of microbes from human to plants during domestication.

Zooming Into the Microbiota of Home-Made and Industrial Kefir Produced in Greece Using Classical Microbiological and Amplicon-Based Metagenomics Analyses

Maria Kazou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the bacterial and yeast/fungal microbiota of homemade and industrial kefir samples from Greece using culture-dependent and -independent techniques. The results showed that home-made samples were dominated by species such as Lentilactobacillus kefiri and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, while industrial beverages contained species like Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. Amplicon-based metagenomics analysis confirmed these findings and revealed different predominant bacterial and yeast genera in home-made and industrial kefir samples.

Microbial colonization and resistome dynamics in food processing environments of a newly opened pork cutting industry during 1.5 years of activity

Jose F. Cobo-Diaz et al.

Summary: The study found that pig carcasses were a source of resistant bacteria that colonized the food processing environment, with drains and certain food-contact surfaces serving as reservoirs for the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Over time, there was an increase in abundance and diversity of ARGs, mainly assigned to Acinetobacter and associated with resistance to antimicrobials frequently used in the region. The presence of mobile genetic elements and lateral gene transfer events were mainly detected in drains at a later sampling time.
