Distribution, characterization, and antibiotic resistance of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in a Chinese population with asymptomatic bacteriuria

Jun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiological characteristics of hvKP in the population with ASB. It found hvKP strains with relatively weak biofilm formation and identified a new sequence type of hvKP derived from ST86. The results suggest that hvKP may cause serious infections in the population with ASB and need to be monitored.

A global perspective on the convergence of hypervirulence and carbapenem resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae

Peng Lan et al.

Summary: Hypervirulence and carbapenem resistance have emerged as two distinct evolutionary directions for Klebsiella pneumoniae, posing a great threat in clinical settings. CR-hvKP strains, integrating both phenotypes, have become increasingly prevalent globally, primarily in Asia. The mechanisms for the emergence of CR-hvKP can be summarised by three patterns, and continued surveillance of their dissemination should be highly prioritised.

Emergence of Colistin Resistance in Carbapenem-Resistant Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae Under the Pressure of Tigecycline

Yawei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the association between colistin resistance and tigecycline pressure in CR-hvKP through clinical cases and in vitro experiments. It was found that developing colistin resistance under tigecycline or colistin pressure may result in a slight virulence cost for CR-hvKP, although the mutants still displayed higher virulence compared to the parent strain.

Aerobactin Seems To Be a Promising Marker Compared With Unstable RmpA2 for the Identification of Hypervirulent Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae: In Silico and In Vitro Evidence

Chaitra Shankar et al.

Summary: The incidence of hypervirulent carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvCRKp) is increasing globally, with high-risk clones acquiring a virulence plasmid and showing phenotypic changes. Resistance to carbapenems is mainly due to OXA-232 and NDM carbapenemases. The presence of non-functional RmpA2 challenges phenotypic screening, highlighting the need for reliable markers for identifying hvCRKp.

An Outbreak of Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in an Intensive Care Unit of a Major Teaching Hospital in Chongqing, China

Lingyi Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular characteristics and epidemiology of CRKP isolated from the ICU of a tertiary hospital in China. The results showed that the CRKP strains were highly resistant to various antibiotics and carried virulence genes. Clonal transmission of ST11 CRKP was observed in the ICU.
