Dynamics of ramping bursts in a respiratory neuron model

Muhammad U. Abdulla et al.

Summary: Introducing the dynamics of extracellular potassium ion concentration and adjusting the parameters in an existing pre-BotC neuron bursting model have successfully induced the pre-inspiratory ramping behavior of respiratory neurons, which previous models failed to capture. The proposed model also provides a greater dynamic range of burst frequencies, durations, and duty cycles compared to existing models.

Putting the theory into 'burstlet theory' with a biophysical model of burstlets and bursts in the respiratory preBotzinger complex

Ryan S. Phillips et al.

Summary: Inspiratory breathing rhythms are generated through synchronized neuronal activity in the preBotzinger complex, with low-amplitude oscillations known as burstlets persisting even at physiological levels. The burstlet theory of respiratory rhythm generation suggests that these subthreshold events contribute to motor output generation. Intracellular calcium dynamics and calcium-activated nonselective cationic current play crucial roles in recruiting rhythmic and non-rhythmic components of the preBotzinger complex for rhythm generation and motor output recruitment.

Configuration and dynamics of dominant inspiratory multineuronal activity patterns during eupnea and gasping generation in vitro

Josue de Jesus Juarez-Vidales et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the pre-Botzinger complex (preBotC) exhibits a scale-free configuration and a rich-club phenomenon, with neurons producing stable multineuronal activity patterns that change during hypoxia, and containing a coactivating core network with a distinctive pattern of coactivation at the beginning of inspirations. These findings provide insights into the network basis of inspiratory rhythm generation and its reconfiguration during hypoxia.

KCNQ Current Contributes to Inspiratory Burst Termination in the Pre-Botzinger Complex of Neonatal Rats in vitro

Ann L. Revill et al.

Summary: Recording KCNQ-like currents in neonatal rat slices with retained respiratory rhythmicity, the study found that blocking KCNQ channels significantly increased inspiratory burst duration, while activation of KCNQ channels decreased it.
