Pyroptosis by caspase-11 inflammasome-Gasdermin D pathway in autoimmune diseases

Jiasi Wu et al.

Summary: Inflammasomes are complex molecular structures that play a critical role in various diseases. The non-canonical inflammasome involving caspase-11 is particularly important in autoimmune diseases. Inhibiting caspase-11 may hold promise as a therapeutic strategy for autoimmune diseases.

Primordial bioenergy sources: The two facets of adenosine triphosphate

Juan C. Fontecilla-Camps

Summary: Two main hypotheses regarding the energy source in early life evolution are abiotic organics from comets/meteorites or atmospheric production, and mineral surface-dependent bioinorganic catalytic reactions. ATP, in addition to being a precursor of nucleic acids, likely played a crucial role in improving nucleic acid polymerization accuracy and transitioning between mineral-bound protocells and free counterparts. Early ATP synthesis for metabolic processes probably relied on substrate level phosphorylation, but later evolution led to a more efficient membrane-bound ATP synthase utilizing chemiosmosis.

Human P2X7 receptors ? Properties of single ATP-gated ion channels

Fritz Markwardt

Summary: Patch clamp investigations help understand the molecular function of single ion channels. The human P2X7 receptor is an ATP-gated ion channel involved in inflammatory and nociceptive reactions. Specific residues and domains play crucial roles in ion channel function.
