Active remote sensing of atmospheric dust using relationships between their depolarization ratios and reflectivity

Evgenij Zubko et al.

Summary: The research discovered a linear correlation between the geometric albedo of agglomerated debris particles and their lidar depolarization ratios, depending on the complex refractive index of the particles. This relationship can be used to determine lidar and radar characteristics, suggesting an approximate inverse relationship between lidar ratios and lidar depolarization ratios.

Polarization lidar for detecting dust orientation: system design and calibration

Alexandra Tsekeri et al.

Summary: Dust orientation has been a focus of recent research efforts, with the development of a new lidar system and polarization techniques enabling vertically resolved measurements of dust orientation. The system provides direct flags of dust orientation and detailed information on particle microphysics. Additionally, the system has the capability to acquire measurements at varying viewing angles and the initial measurements were conducted on a dust-free day.
