The morphology of the Late Pleistocene hominin remains from the site of La Cotte de St Brelade, Jersey (Channel Islands)

Tim Compton et al.

Summary: Thirteen fully erupted teeth were excavated at a Paleolithic site in Jersey, believed to be Neanderthal but showing some similarities to Homo sapiens. The findings suggest a possible shared Neanderthal and Homo sapiens ancestry.

Initial Upper Palaeolithic humans in Europe had recent Neanderthal ancestry

Mateja Hajdinjak et al.

Summary: A recent study found that three Late Pleistocene modern humans from Bacho Kiro Cave in Bulgaria, dated to between 45,930 and 42,580 years ago, are the earliest known in Europe and show closer genetic ties to East Asian and American populations. These individuals also had Neanderthal ancestors in their family history, suggesting common mixing between the first European modern humans and Neanderthals.

A genome sequence from a modern human skull over 45,000 years old from Zlaty kun in Czechia

Kay Pruefer et al.

Summary: Modern humans expanded into Eurasia more than 40,000 years ago and carried 2-3% Neanderthal ancestry. The genetic makeup of the earliest Europeans colonizing the continent remains poorly understood, but a genome from a female individual from Czechia showed genetic contribution different from later Europeans and Asians. This individual from Czechia is one of the earliest Eurasian inhabitants following the expansion out of Africa, with longer Neanderthal segment lengths compared to other ancient genomes.
