UAVC: A New Method for Correcting Lidar Overlap Factors Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Vertical Detection

Ming Zhao et al.

Summary: A method called unmanned aerial vehicle correction (UAVC) is proposed to calibrate the overlap factor of Lidar. By comparing the vertical detection profiles of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Lidar, the overlap factor profile can be obtained. Experimental results show that this method can effectively obtain low-altitude aerosol information.

PM2.5 and O3 relationships affected by the atmospheric oxidizing capacity the Yangtze River Delta, China

Momei Qin et al.

Summary: The study found a strong positive correlation between AOC and O-3, while the correlation with PM2.5 was weaker. The concentration of precursors in winter may drive secondary aerosol formation, with aqueous or heterogeneous reactions likely playing an important role in high aerosol loadings in the YRD region.

Spatiotemporal variations of air pollutants based on ground observation and emission sources over 19 Chinese urban agglomerations during 2015-2019

Tianhui Tao et al.

Summary: This study uses mathematical statistics to compare the air quality in 19 urban agglomerations in China during the 13th Five-Year Plan period. The results show that clean air days are increasing, especially in the summer and in South and Southwest China. PM2.5, PM10, and O-3 are still the main pollutants. The study also finds that increased emissions of certain pollutants contribute to the increase in ozone pollution.

Changes in Long-Term PM2.5 Pollution in the Urban and Suburban Areas of China's Three Largest Urban Agglomerations from 2000 to 2020

Lili Zhang et al.

Summary: Particulate matter (PM2.5) is a significant public health concern in China, and the government has implemented measures to improve air quality. PM2.5 concentrations in urban areas are higher than in suburban areas, but have been decreasing since 2013. However, the exposure risks in urban areas are still higher than those in suburban areas, indicating the need for stronger air pollution mitigation policies.

Trends of Planetary Boundary Layer Height Over Urban Cities of China From 1980-2018

Yanfeng Huo et al.

Summary: Boundary layer height (BLH) is an important parameter in climatology and air pollution research, especially in urban areas. Using ERA-interim data and sounding data, a study in eastern China showed an increasing trend in daytime BLH in most cities, particularly during the spring season. Variability in meteorological parameters and aerosol concentrations play important roles in the development of BLH.

Vertical profiling of black carbon and ozone using a multicopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in urban Shenzhen of South China

Cheng Wu et al.

Summary: Existing studies on vertical profiling of black carbon (BC) and ozone (O3) were mainly conducted in rural areas, leading to limited knowledge of their vertical distributions in urban areas. To fill this knowledge gap, vertical profiling was conducted in a highly urbanized area of Shenzhen, China using a multicopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. The study found that eBC concentration decreased with height, while O3 level increased with altitude. The shape of vertical profiles of eBC and O3 can be affected by planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) and air mass origin.

Ozone pollution in China: Background and transboundary contributions to ozone concentration & related health effects across the country

Shovan Kumar Sahu et al.

Summary: China experiences high ozone concentrations with the highest contributions in eastern and southern regions. Policy relevant background concentrations are high across China and have significant impacts on total ozone concentrations. Ozone-related premature mortality is mainly concentrated in northern and eastern regions, and ozone from outside Asia also significantly contributes to China's ozone pollution.

Global PM2.5-attributable health burden from 1990 to 2017: Estimates from the Global Burden of disease study 2017

Xiang Bu et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to ambient and household particulate matter (PM2.5) causes significant death and health loss globally, with ambient PM2.5 contributing to the majority of deaths and health burdens. Non-communicable diseases attributable to ambient PM2.5 are a major concern in middle and low SDI countries, while household PM2.5 contributes to lower respiratory infections in low SDI countries in Africa and Asia. Strategies need to be developed to reduce PM2.5-attributable burdens in specific global settings.

Estimation of the vertical distribution of particle matter (PM2.5) concentration and its transport flux from lidar measurements based on machine learning algorithms

Yingying Ma et al.

Summary: This study used machine learning algorithms to invert PM2.5 concentrations from aerosol EC, with the RF model proving to be the most suitable. The analysis also showed the impact of local time on PM2.5 concentrations and aerosol transport flux. It has been further indicated that the influence of meteorological variables should be considered in PM2.5 concentration inversions.

PM2.5 reductions in Chinese cities from 2013 to 2019 remain significant despite the inflating effects of meteorological conditions

Qirui Zhong et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a significant environmental issue in China, and the country has made progress in reducing PM2.5 levels since the introduction of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan in 2013. However, there is still some discrepancy between observed reductions and the actual decrease in PM2.5 levels. Research suggests that if current control efforts continue, the long-term air quality target set for 2035 will be met.

Rapid increase in summer surface ozone over the North China Plain during 2013-2019: a side effect of particulate matter reduction control?

Xiaodan Ma et al.

Summary: This study analyzes surface observations and satellite retrieval data to determine the increase in surface ozone in the North China Plain region, finding that anthropogenic emission control strategies and changes in aerosol concentrations are the main driving factors. Numerical simulations indicate that reduction of O3 precursor emissions and aerosol radiative effect contribute significantly to the increase in surface ozone, emphasizing the importance of considering aerosol chemistry in future research for developing more effective emission control strategies.
