Formation and Evolution of a Freshwater Plume in the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic in February 2020

G. Reverdin et al.

Summary: In February 2020, a 120-km-wide freshwater plume was observed near the Demerara Rise through satellite and in situ measurements. The freshwater plume was initially stratified in the upper 10 m with Amazon water distributed down to 40 m. Favorable wind direction contributed to the dispersion of the freshwater plume towards the northwest direction, extending into the Atlantic Ocean.

Matchup Characteristics of Sea Surface Salinity Using a High-Resolution Ocean Model

Frederick M. Bingham et al.

Summary: This study investigates the validation process of sea surface salinity (SSS) satellite measurements using a high-resolution numerical ocean model. The results show small bias and RMSD values ranging from 0.08 to 0.18, providing an estimate of representation error when comparing single point Argo floats to area-average satellite values. This has implications for future SSS satellite missions in terms of accurately computing errors to gauge the total accuracy of retrieved SSS values.

EUREC4A

Bjorn Stevens et al.

Summary: The EUREC4A campaign was a 5-week long scientific research activity that took place in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic, providing insights into factors influencing cloud formation, the impact of climate warming, and the connections to other components of the Earth system. Through various observational methods, the campaign marked a significant milestone in observational studies and explored scientific facets ranging from circulations to cloud droplet clustering.
