Regional assessment of daily reference evapotranspiration: Can ground observations be replaced by blending ERA5-Land meteorological reanalysis and CM-SAF satellite-based radiation data?

A. Pelosi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in Sicily, Italy, using a blended ERA5L and CM-SAF dataset, showing that the blended dataset outperformed other datasets and can serve as a good proxy for assessing ground weather observations.

Evaluation of Landsat-8 TIRS data recalibrations and land surface temperature split-window algorithms over a homogeneous crop area with different phenological land covers

Raquel Niclos et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the successive re-calibrations in Landsat-8 TIRS data since launch, as well as the performance of single-channel (SC) corrections and split-window (SW) algorithms for retrieving land surface temperature (LST). The results show that the current TIRS data in Collection 1 performs well, but differences were introduced in the calibration update announced for Collection 2.

Comparison of Satellite Driven Surface Energy Balance Models in Estimating Crop Evapotranspiration in Semi-Arid to Arid Inter-Mountain Region

Bibek Acharya et al.

Summary: The study compared four remote sensing models for quantifying and mapping ETc in the semi-arid to arid inter-mountain region of Big Horn Basin, Wyoming, and found that METRIC performed the best across all land cover types, followed by SEBS, S-SEBI, and SEBAL. All SEB models generally overestimated ETc and underestimated sensible heat fluxes under dry conditions.

Evapotranspiration Estimation with the S-SEBI Method from Landsat 8 Data against Lysimeter Measurements at the Barrax Site, Spain

Jose Antonio Sobrino et al.

Summary: The study compared remote sensing-based ET estimates using the S-SEBI model with in situ lysimeter measurements for different land covers in Barrax, Spain from 2014 to 2018. Daily estimates outperformed hourly estimates, with Grass and Vineyard showing the best performance. The S-SEBI model demonstrated the ability to retrieve ET from Landsat 8 data with good accuracy and variability between pixels, making it a suitable option for operational ET remote sensing programs.

ERA5-Land: a state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset for land applications

Joaquin Munoz-Sabater et al.

Summary: ERA5-Land is a global dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts within the Copernicus Climate Change Service, covering the period from 1950 to the present. It provides enhanced resolution and consistency in describing the evolution of the water and energy cycles, with added value in hydrological and energy cycle analysis.
