An exploratory analysis of the spatial variation of malaria cases and associated household socio-economic factors in flood-prone areas of Mbire district, Zimbabwe

Tawanda Manyangadze et al.

Summary: This study examined spatial distribution of malaria in flood-prone areas of Mbire district, Zimbabwe, finding significant associations between malaria cases and house material types, water sources, and age of household head. Results suggest the need for place-specific malaria intervention strategies in flood-prone areas.

Surveillance for foodborne disease outbreaks in Zhejiang Province, China, 2015-2020

Lili Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed foodborne disease outbreaks in Zhejiang Province and found that bacteria and poisonous mushrooms were the main pathogens. Household settings were the most common outbreak locations. Animal-based foods were the most commonly reported food associated with foodborne diseases, while Vibrio parahaemolyticus was the most frequent bacteria found in catering service units.

A Heat Vulnerability Index: Spatial Patterns of Exposure, Sensitivity and Adaptive Capacity for Urbanites of Four Cities of India

Suresh Kumar Rathi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the extreme heat vulnerability of the population in four cities across India and found that the majority of households fell under moderate to high vulnerability level. The study also revealed that household vulnerability is more significantly related to adaptive capacity than sensitivity and exposure.

Dominant Factors and Spatial Heterogeneity of Land Surface Temperatures in Urban Areas: A Case Study in Fuzhou, China

Liuqing Yang et al.

Summary: This study quantified the urban heat island (UHI) effect using Landsat 8 image inversion land surface temperatures (LSTs). By employing ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, geographically weighted regression (GWR) models, and multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), the researchers explored the spatial heterogeneities of the influencing factors and LST. The findings highlight the importance of factors such as building density, normalized difference impervious surface index (NDISI), and sky view factor (SVF) in elevated LST, while building height, forest land percentage, and waterbody percentage were negatively correlated with LST. Furthermore, the study revealed significant spatial non-stationary characteristics for variables like built-up percentage and population density.

Flood Management, Characterization and Vulnerability Analysis Using an Integrated RS-GIS and 2D Hydrodynamic Modelling Approach: The Case of Deg Nullah, Pakistan

Ijaz Ahmad et al.

Summary: One-dimensional hydraulic models are limited in simulating flood characteristics other than depth and extent. This study presents a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model combined with remote sensing and GIS to generate additional flood characteristic maps. The model was applied to simulate an extreme flood event in Pakistan, and the results showed good agreement with satellite imagery and observations.

Influence of Spatial Resolution on Satellite-Based PM2.5 Estimation: Implications for Health Assessment

Heming Bai et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of three PM2.5 estimation models at different spatial resolutions in the Yangtze River Delta region. The results show that the model performance is not sensitive to spatial resolution change, except for the Random Forest model which performs better at finer resolutions. Additionally, the study finds that the estimated PM2.5 concentration and attributable mortality strongly depend on spatial resolution, with higher values at coarser resolutions.

Geo-spatially modelling dengue epidemics in urban cities: a case study of Lahore, Pakistan

Muhammad Imran et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the epidemiological impact of dengue fever arbovirosis in urban tropical areas of Pakistan by developing a GWLR model for geospatially predicting Aedes larvae presence. The study found significant relationships between temperature, rainfall, and NDVI variables with the presence of Aedes larvae in the South and Southeast of the study area, while weak relationships were observed in highly populated areas in the North and North-West. Interpolating GWLR coefficients generated more accurate maps of Aedes larvae presence or absence.

Dynamics of exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity and agricultural vulnerability at district scale for Maharashtra, India

Deepika Swami et al.

Summary: Climate variability, particularly monsoon and temperature variability, poses a new threat to agricultural systems globally. Long-term factors are found to be crucial in determining agricultural vulnerability. A study analyzing 50 years of data from 1966 to 2015 in Maharashtra, India, identified key drivers of vulnerability at the district level, revealing variations in exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity among districts.

Impact of heavy precipitation events on pathogen occurrence in estuarine areas of the Puzi River in Taiwan

Yi-Jia Shih et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of heavy precipitation on pathogen occurrence in the Puzi River estuary, with Vibrio parahaemolyticus and adenovirus being the most frequently detected pathogens. Water quality parameters showed significant differences between groups with and without V. parahaemolyticus, while daily rainfall was negatively correlated with detection rates. Although no significant differences were found for adenovirus, there was a positive correlation with daily rainfall. Further research is needed to understand the implications of extreme weather events on estuarine environments.

Examining social vulnerability to flood of affordable housing communities in Nanjing, China: Building long-term disaster resilience of low-income communities

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: This paper examines flooding disasters and social vulnerability in developing countries using Nanjing as an example. The research reveals that social vulnerability is influenced by exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability, with newer buildings and better built environments leading to lower risk exposure, and higher education levels and social capital among residents reducing sensitivity to floods. The study also highlights the importance of government emergency operations and residents' response capabilities in improving community adaptability to flooding.
