Vegetation coverage of desert ecosystems in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is underestimated

Xin Geng et al.

Summary: This study improves the accuracy of vegetation information extraction in the desert ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using UAV RGB images and a boosted regression tree model. The study finds that there is a robust relationship between FVC and modified soil-adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI) in the desert ecosystem, and proposes a power model to derive local FVC. The current published FVC products underestimate vegetation coverage in the desert ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Object-Based Wetland Vegetation Classification Using Multi-Feature Selection of Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle RGB Imagery

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility of using RGB imagery from the DJI Mavic Pro for wetland vegetation classification at the species level. It found that multi-feature combinations played an important role in wetland vegetation classification, with the random forest algorithm (RF) utilizing 53 features showing the best performance. The results demonstrate the potential of UAV-based RGB imagery and the OBIA approach for high-precision wetland vegetation classification.

Using UAV Imagery to Detect and Map Woody Species Encroachment in a Subalpine Grassland: Advantages and Limits

Ludovica Oddi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the potential of using high-resolution UAV imagery to monitor the early development of woody species encroachment and compare the performance of manual and semi-automatic classification methods. Results showed that manual photo-interpretation was the most accurate method, followed by the pixel-based approach, which was faster than manual and more accurate than the object-based method.

A Hybrid Approach of Combining Random Forest with Texture Analysis and VDVI for Desert Vegetation Mapping Based on UAV RGB Data

Huoyan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study developed a method for mapping desert rare vegetation using the RF algorithm and VDVI and texture features, which showed higher accuracy compared to traditional methods. Texture features were found to be more important than spectral features in desert vegetation mapping, and the combination of RGB+VDVI+texture features could improve accuracy.

Quantifying the influences of natural and human factors on the water footprint of afforestation in desert regions of northern China

Ziyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water consumption of afforestation projects in northern China, using water footprint as an indicator. The results showed an increase in afforestation area, with a high spatial heterogeneity in water consumption. Potential evapotranspiration was found to be the dominant factor influencing the afforestation water footprint, explaining 20.4% of the variation. The interactions between natural and human factors had a higher impact on afforestation water footprint than single factors, suggesting the importance of considering multiple factors in ecological restoration interventions in arid and semi-arid areas.
