Ecological Responses to Climate Change and Human Activities in the Arid and Semi-Arid Regions of Xinjiang in China

Modeling and analyzing supply-demand relationships of water resources in Xinjiang from a perspective of ecosystem services

Summary: Water shortage is a major challenge for economic and social development in arid and semi-arid areas. This study focused on Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China and analyzed the supply-demand relationships of water resources using the InVEST model. The results showed that while water resources in Xinjiang were in a slight deficit, there was an increase in water yield depth and a decrease in water utilization depth, leading to improved water resource efficiency. The study also highlighted the importance of incorporating ecosystem services in water resource evaluation.

Effects of climate and grazing on the soil organic carbon dynamics of the grasslands in Northern Xinjiang during the past twenty years

Multidimensional assessment of global dryland changes under future warming in climate projections

Summary: Drylands are home to over one-third of the world's population and are at risk of anthropogenic climate change. Despite climate models projecting an expansion of global drylands in the future, considering the impact of atmospheric CO2 concentration on vegetation water consumption leads to a slower expansion rate than previously reported. Changes in hydrologic and agro-ecological perspectives show significant shrinkage in drylands over the coming decades, indicating reduced aridity in these regions. Additionally, the study demonstrates that while net radiation primarily drives the expansion of atmospheric drylands, increases in precipitation and vegetation water use efficiency play key roles in changes in hydrologic and agro-ecological drylands.

Observed changes in vapor pressure deficit suggest a systematic drying of the atmosphere in Xinjiang of China

Summary: The study found that the VPD in Xinjiang has been increasing from 1961 to 2017, with increases in all seasons and particularly pronounced in desert areas. The rapid drying of the atmosphere in Xinjiang since 1994 is mainly attributed to rising temperatures and decreasing relative humidity. Additionally, differences in e(s) and e(a) in the air have also contributed to changes in VPD.

LAI-indicated vegetation dynamic in ecologically fragile region: A case study in the Three-North Shelter Forest program region of China

Summary: The Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP) region in China is an important ecological area covering over 42.4% of China's land. Despite various ecological restoration projects implemented, evaluation work has been limited. Leaf area index was proposed as an indicator to evaluate the ecological restoration situation, with analysis conducted using GLASS LAI dataset from 2000 to 2015. Forest cover slightly increased, mainly in regions with annual precipitation greater than 400 mm, while grassland area decreased.

Assessing MODIS carbon and water fluxes in grasslands and shrublands in semiarid regions using eddy covariance tower data

Quantitative contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation changes over multiple time scales on the Loess Plateau
