Regional differentiation in the ecological effects of land cover change in China

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Land cover changes in China have diverse ecological effects on temperature, biomass formation, and greenness, which vary across different climatic regions and elevation levels. Forest conversion to grassland and shrubland has a warming effect, while cultivated land conversion to grassland and shrubland leads to reduced greenness and biomass formation. These findings provide insights for shaping China's land use policy to balance between cultivated and natural land.

Are there differences in the forces driving the conversion of different non-urban lands into urban use? A case study of Beijing

Daquan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial patterns of urban expansion and driving factors in China's large cities using Beijing as an example. It found that cultivated land and ecological land were the main sources of newly developed urban land, with topography, location, transportation, socioeconomic development, and spatial planning playing key roles in the conversion process. Additionally, governments at different levels had influences on the conversion of different types of non-urban land.

Multiscale analysis of factors affecting food security in China, 1980-2017

Furong Lv et al.

Summary: Food security is a critical issue that affects people's lives and social stability, with different spatial and temporal patterns and driving factors at varying scales. Research shows that the key factors influencing food security differ at different scales, emphasizing the importance of conducting multiple-scale analysis to provide decision-making support.

Identification of cultivated land change trajectory and analysis of its process characteristics using time-series Landsat images: A study in the overlapping areas of crop and mineral production in Yanzhou City, China

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the time-series of NDVI and identified the trajectory type and time nodes of cultivated land change using clustering methods. The results showed high overall accuracy, with majority of cultivated land converting to non-cultivated land during 1989-2005 and reclamation occurring in 2009, 2011, and 2013. Permanent cultivated land accounted for the highest proportion among trajectory types.

Large spatial variation and stagnation of cropland gross primary production increases the challenges of sustainable grain production and food security in China

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the cropland gross primary production (GPP) and related factors in China, revealing a mixed trend of continuous increase, stagnation, or decline in GPP. The spatial mismatch between crop production and water availability has worsened, posing challenges for sustainable management and food security.

Spatiotemporal changes in the state of food security across mainland china during 1990-2015: A multi-scale analysis

Jianmin Qiao et al.

Summary: Food security is essential for individual livelihood and social stability, and assessing its state is important for making agricultural policies. This study used a spatially explicit crop model to simulate major crop production in China and developed food security indicators based on food production and GDP per capita relative to the global average. Results show an improvement in mainland China's food security situation from 1990 to 2015, mainly due to enhanced purchasing power, with variations in food security levels observed at different scales.

Simulation of Land Use Pattern Evolution from a Multi-Scenario Perspective: A Case Study of Suzhou City in Anhui Province, China

Rongtian Zhang et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover change is a frontier issue in geography research. Using remote sensing data and models, this study simulated the evolution of land use landscape patterns in Suzhou City, Anhui Province, over the past 20 years. Results showed significant conversion from cultivated land to construction land, with a high simulation accuracy from the modified model, providing important decision-making support for land use optimization and remediation.

Urbanization, land use change, and carbon emissions: Quantitative assessments for city-level carbon emissions in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

Yuan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of urbanization on land use carbon emissions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration in China. It found that while there was a general increase in built-up land and city-level carbon emissions, Beijing showed a decline in emissions despite significant urban expansion. The relationship between urbanization and LUCEs can be categorized into three modes: “high urbanization low emissions”, “middle urbanization high emissions”, and “low urbanization low emissions”.

Reflections on China's food security and land use policy under rapid urbanization

Yansui Liu et al.

Summary: Food security plays a crucial role in a country's economy, people's livelihoods, and social stability. China, as the world's most populous developing country, produces a significant portion of the world's food and feeds a large portion of its population. However, China's food security faces challenges such as population decline, changes in cultivated land area, and volatility in grain output. Addressing these issues and ensuring China's food security is essential but poses many challenges.

Driving forces of cultivated land evolution in agro-pastoral areas on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau based on ecological niche theory

Yixuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized niche theory to investigate the impact of cultivated land expansion and development on ecological roles on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Findings revealed that grassland was dominant in most counties, with significant spatial variability at the interface between cultivated land and grassland. Different provinces showed varying rates of cultivated land occupancy and niche overlap.

Yangbing Miao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact mechanisms of China's urban-rural expansion on cultivated land from 1996 to 2006, finding that the establishment and expansion of various economic development zones occupied most of the cultivated land, and there are differences in the mechanisms of land occupation at different stages of regional development.

Calculation of Ecological Compensation Standards for Arable Land Based on the Value Flow of Support Services

Yunxiao Bai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on China and establishes a connection between ecological compensation for arable land and the production, circulation, and consumption of staple foods, calculating the ecological compensation standards between provinces. It suggests the establishment of a central government ecological compensation fund for arable land to coordinate the collection and distribution of compensation among provinces.

Land Use Transition and Driving Forces in Chinese Loess Plateau: A Case Study from Pu County, Shanxi Province

Han Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial-temporal patterns and driving forces of land use transitions at the village level in Pu County using high-resolution land use survey data. The results showed that the main driving force for large-scale conversion of cultivated land to forest land in Pu County was the policy of returning farmland to forest.
