Innovation for sustainable mining: Integrated planning of underground coal mining and mine reclamation

Gensheng Li et al.

Summary: The integrated planning of mining and reclamation is important for reducing land degradation and addressing conflicts. This study adopted concurrent mining and reclamation technologies to divide the planning into four key steps and discussed the impacts of mining on reclamation. The requirements of reclamation for mining were also discussed. The results showed that integrated planning can reduce damage, reclaim land in a timely manner, and alleviate conflicts.

Using historical aerial photographs to measure earthquake deformation: Testing the effects of scan resolution

Lejun Lu et al.

Summary: Historical aerial photographs are valuable for studying past earthquakes, with scan resolution affecting digitisation and deformation measurements. In a case study of the 1978 Tabas-e-Golshan earthquake in Iran, scans at 600 dpi yielded the most consistent results, with a misfit of 0.7 m, showcasing the importance of resolution for accurate analysis.

Time evolution of mining-related residual subsidence monitored over a 24-year period using InSAR in southern Alsace, France

Guillaume Modeste et al.

Summary: This study investigates surface subsidence caused by mining activities in the Alsatian potassic basin using SAR interferometry and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry. The results show that the surface subsidence decreases rapidly after the end of mining operations, with the InSAR and leveling measurements becoming consistent from 1996/1997 onwards. It is demonstrated that SAR interferometry is effective for monitoring small amplitude mining-induced subsidence over the residual phase.

Quantifying Debris Flood Deposits in an Alaskan Fjord Using Multitemporal Digital Elevation Models

Matthew Balazs et al.

Summary: The study quantified the changes in sedimentation in the Japanese Creek drainage using six DEMs and demonstrated that major flood events resulted in increased sedimentation in the drainage. By correlating sediment budget changes with rainfall data and flood events, the study showed that the DoD method and using multiple technologies to create DEMs is effective in quantifying volumetric changes of sediment redistribution.

An Approach to Thresholds for Evaluating Post-Mining Site Reclamation

Adegbite Adeleke Adesipo et al.

Summary: The developed time-scale conceptual threshold model provides a comprehensive framework for assessing, evaluating, documenting, and monitoring post-mining site reclamation progress. It covers the entire reclamation process from initial state to ultimate state, including soil reconstruction, revegetation, reaching minimum threshold, and higher threshold levels. The model is applicable to various degraded ecosystems and can be adopted in national and international laws.

Multi-scale deformation monitoring with Sentinel-1 InSAR analyses along the Middle Route of the South-North Water Diversion Project in China

Jie Dong et al.

Summary: InSAR analysis of the Middle Route canal of the South-North Water Diversion Project showed overall stability, with some sections experiencing significant embankment deformation or land subsidence, particularly in high-filled sections. Additionally, severe uneven land subsidence along the Tianjin Branch Route was identified as a significant threat to the long-term safety of local water transfer operations.

Using time series InSAR to assess the deformation activity of open-pit mine dump site in severe cold area

Chuangang Gong et al.

Summary: The study utilized SAR images and UAV data to monitor the topographic changes and soil erosion of an open-pit coal mine dump in China. The results showed a correlation between soil consolidation and dump stability, while soil erosion had a detrimental effect. The research demonstrated the effectiveness of using satellite and UAV technology for continuous monitoring of deformation and erosion in dump sites.

Use of Multiplatform SAR Imagery in Mining Deformation Monitoring with Dense Vegetation Coverage: A Case Study in the Fengfeng Mining Area, China

Bochen Zhang et al.

Summary: Ground deformation related to mining activities can lead to disasters such as ground fissures, collapses, and earthquakes. This study utilizes multiple-platform SAR images to monitor mining deformation over dense vegetation areas, revealing significant subsidence in the Fengfeng mining area. Results show that the root-mean-square error between InSAR and leveling measurements is 83.5 mm/year at two mining sites.
