Refreezing of Partially Melted Hydrometeors: Polarimetric Radar Observations and Microphysical Model Simulations

Dana M. Tobin et al.

Summary: The polarimetric radar signature of hydrometeor refreezing has been found to be useful in identifying ice pellet production, but its features in the refreezing of partially melted hydrometeors have not been well examined. This study analyzes polarimetric radar data and develops a simplified microphysical model to simulate the refreezing process, finding that there is no distinct polarimetric feature associated with the refreezing of partially melted hydrometeors.

Polarimetric Radar Quantitative Precipitation Estimation

Alexander Ryzhkov et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of existing polarimetric methodologies for rain and snow estimation and their operational implementation, as well as the impact of drop size distributions on rainfall estimation. The radar rainfall estimation algorithms based on specific attenuation and specific differential phase are found to be the most efficient. Furthermore, polarimetric techniques for the correction of vertical reflectivity and snow measurement show promising results. Lastly, the study presents a summary of the latest operational radar QPE products available in the US.

An Automated Python Algorithm to Quantify ZDR Arc and KDP-ZDR Separation Signatures in Supercells

Matthew B. Wilson et al.

Summary: Supercell thunderstorms exhibit specific radar signatures such as Z(DR) arc and K-DP-Z(DR) separation, which can be indicators of tornado potential. An automated Python algorithm has been developed to objectively identify and track these signatures in radar data, offering potential applications in research and operations.

A New Method for Ice-Ice Aggregation in the Adaptive Habit Model

Kara J. Sulia et al.

Summary: A novel methodology for modeling ice-ice aggregation is introduced, combining a modified algorithm with offline simulator information, leading to enhancements in snow development and reductions in ice mass and number concentrations. The sensitivity of snow processes to the new parameterization is highlighted, along with enhancements in surface precipitation due to the persistence of snow at lower altitudes. New scheme also results in changes in radar reflectivity at the surface and its spatial distribution.

Hailstone Shapes

Laura Shedd et al.

Summary: The study analyzed a large dataset of hailstones collected in the field to find that hailstones tend to have ellipsoidal shapes, rather than spheres or spheroids. As hailstones increase in size, they become more irregular in shape, which may improve parameterizations in models and remote sensing hail detection algorithms.

Summary: The study explored the potential of polarimetric Doppler radar measurements to enhance predictions of ice microphysical processes within an idealized model-observational framework. A novel framework was developed to compare simulated and observed radar measurements, using Bayesian inference and a Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler to estimate the probability distribution of microphysical model parameters.
