Extraction of the Bacterial Extracellular Polysaccharide FucoPol by Membrane-Based Methods: Efficiency and Impact on Biopolymer Properties

Silvia Baptista et al.

Summary: In this study, membrane-based methods were evaluated for the recovery of fucose-rich exopolysaccharide (EPS) secreted by Enterobacter A47. The optimized method showed a reduction in water consumption and extraction time, and an increase in product recovery and purity. The changes also improved the emulsion-forming capacity and rheological properties of the biopolymer, which are important for its application in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products.

Cation-mediated gelation of the fucose-rich polysaccharide FucoPol: preparation and characterization of hydrogel beads and their cytotoxicity assessment

Leticia Fialho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the iron- and copper-mediated gelation of FucoPol, a fucose-rich bacterial polysaccharide, for the first time. The resulting hydrogel beads had different properties depending on the metal ions used, with iron leading to stable and non-cytotoxic beads, and copper resulting in fragile and cytotoxic ones. Coating copper-mediated beads with an iron-mediated gel layer increased stability and reduced cytotoxicity, suggesting potential applications in biomedicine, agriculture, and bioremediation.

Investigations of Olive Oil Industry By-Products Extracts with Potential Skin Benefits in Topical Formulations

Andreia Nunes et al.

Summary: The by-products of the olive oil industry, rich in phenolic compounds and with toxic organic load, have valuable properties that allow their reuse in cosmetic products. In this study, extracts of these by-products were successfully incorporated into oil-in-water creams, showing compatibility with skin and antioxidant efficiency. The creams exhibited stable characteristics, suitable rheological performance, and strong network structure, highlighting their potential in cosmetic formulations.

Kinetic stability of the oil-in-water emulsions and dynamic interfacial properties of mixtures of sucrose esters and polysaccharides

Raquel Nunes Fernandes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interfacial properties of oil-in-water emulsions containing sugar esters and polysaccharides. The synthesis of sucrose fatty acid esters using immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B, as well as the determination of equilibrium surface tension and interfacial viscoelasticity, were discussed. The presence of polysaccharides was found to increase interfacial tension and promote flocculation of droplets, while all emulsions exhibited excellent stability over 28 days.

Meadowfoam seed oil as a natural dispersing agent for colorants in lipstick

Briana Maktabi et al.

Summary: The study found that meadowfoam seed oil performed similarly to castor oil and octyldodecanol as a pigment dispersing agent in lipsticks. The hardness and other characteristics of lipsticks varied based on differences in viscosity of dispersing agents and oil absorption of the powder, showing that by modifying the amount of pigment and dispersing agent used, lipsticks with similar characteristics to commercial products can be formulated.

Effects of Salinity and pH on the Stability of Clay-Stabilized Oil-in-Water Pickering Emulsions

Long Yu et al.

Summary: Utilizing sodium (Na)-montmorillonite particles to stabilize oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions can result in stable emulsions with smaller droplets in acidic and high-salinity environments. The three-dimensional (3D) clay network formed by clay particles at critical salinities effectively prevents creaming of the emulsion. Emulsion stability against creaming and coalescence is enhanced under more acidic and saline conditions due to denser clay particle adsorption and greater restriction on droplet motion and collision.
