Stepwise Conformational Transitions of Stimuli-Responsive Linear Ternary Heterografted Bottlebrush Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Michael T. Kelly et al.

Summary: Stepwise conformational transitions of molecular bottlebrushes were achieved using two distinct stimuli-responsive polymers and PEO as side chains. The transitions were driven by pH-induced soluble-to-insoluble and/or temperature-triggered lower critical solution temperature transitions of the responsive side-chain polymers.

Synthesis and characterization of poly(ethylene glycol) bottlebrush networks via ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Brandon R. Clarke et al.

Summary: This article reports a method to overcome crosslinking in commercial poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) caused by diol impurities, allowing for good control over the molecular weight of bottlebrush polymers. PEG-based bottlebrush networks were successfully synthesized through ring-opening metathesis polymerization, achieving high conversions and low sol fractions (<2%). The crystallinity and mechanical properties of these networks were further modified by solvent swelling. The synthesis methods highlighted in this study demonstrate the potential of bottlebrush network architecture in the rational design of new materials.

Phospholipids and Hyaluronan: From Molecular Interactions to Nano- and Macroscale Friction

Sixuan Li et al.

Summary: Phospholipids and hyaluronan are crucial biomolecules for the lubrication of articular joints, exhibiting excellent lubrication properties at micro- and nanoscale friction contacts. Our study demonstrates that phospholipids alone and in mixture with hyaluronan can significantly decrease friction forces on macroscopic rough surfaces, providing insights for developing aqueous-based lubrication systems.

Recent Progress in Cartilage Lubrication

Weifeng Lin et al.

Summary: Healthy articular cartilage has very low friction coefficients, which help reduce wear and tear and cartilage degradation, maintaining the balance of chondrocyte functions. Investigating the origins of low friction in articular cartilage is crucial for alleviating disease symptoms and slowing or reversing the degradation process. Recent studies have focused on the mechanisms of joint lubrication and the development of natural and bio-inspired lubricants.

Summary: Polymers containing catechol groups have attracted attention for their mimicking of mussel adhesive proteins, allowing strong binding to surfaces underwater. This study evaluates the wear resistance of such polymers using an AFM-based method, comparing different anchoring groups and analyzing wear volume and nanomechanical properties. The study also explores the effect of layer thickness on stiffness and evaluates stick-slip characteristics.

Summary: An articular cartilage-inspired system was developed using a densely grafted CPB for lubrication and bioinertness, and a CNF network for mechanical reinforcement. The modified CNFs composite films showed high mechanical strength, low coefficient of friction, and reduced adhesion, with the latter two properties improved by the modification with CPB.
