Bromelain and Nisin: The Natural Antimicrobials with High Potential in Biomedicine

Urska Jancic et al.

Summary: Infectious diseases and cancer are among the most significant public health problems and the leading cause of death worldwide. The situation has become more complex with the development of multidrug-resistant microorganisms. New drugs are urgently needed to control the increasing spread of diseases. This review discusses natural antimicrobial peptides and therapeutic enzymes, their structure, properties, mechanism of action, immobilization strategies, and recent applications in biomedicine. The review also highlights the future prospects of commercializing these important bioactive compounds.

Bioinspired multifunctional adhesive system for next generation bio-additively designed dental restorations

Rizacan Sarikaya et al.

Summary: Resin-based composite materials are widely used in dental restorations, but their durability is compromised by decay at the margins where adhesive is applied. To address this issue, a biohybrid adhesive design has been proposed to incorporate antimicrobial and remineralization properties for improved performance.

Summary: The study found that incorporating 15% or 20% of branched silicone methacrylate (BSM) in resin matrix could endow dental resin composites (DRCs) with inhibition effect on dual-species biofilm formation, without impairing their physiochemical properties, bonding strength to adhesive treated dentin, and cytotoxicity.
