Bioactive and functional biodegradable packaging films reinforced with nanoparticles

Chenxi Wang et al.

Summary: Biopolymer packaging films are biodegradable and environmentally-friendly, yet their poor mechanical and barrier properties limit their application. By transforming natural biopolymers into nanoparticles through different treatments, significant functional properties can be achieved for applications in food packaging.

Gelatin-based composite films and their application in food packaging: A review

Qingying Luo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the production methods and modification approaches for improving the functional properties of gelatin films, as well as their potential applications, challenges, and limitations in food packaging. Further research is needed to prolong the modification of gelatin-based films using naturally available edible materials, and studies about possible health hazards associated with the continuous use of gelatin-based packaging films should also be conducted in the future.

Development of sodium alginate-pectin/TiO2 nanocomposites: Antibacterial and bioactivity investigations

Shadpour Mallakpour et al.

Summary: In this study, sodium alginate-pectin composite (ALG-PEC CS) and nanocomposites (NCs) films were prepared with 0.5, 1, and 2 wt% TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) using CaCl2 and glutaraldehyde (Glu) as cross-linkers. The film with 2 wt% TiO2 NPs showed the best bioactivity and antibacterial performance without cytotoxicity.

Structure, physicochemical properties, and adsorption performance of the ethyl cellulose/bentonite composite films

Olga Alekseeva et al.

Summary: Ethyl cellulose filled with bentonite particles by mechanical dispersion to produce composite film materials. The tensile strength of the polymer material increased by 35-40% when doped with bentonite. The modification of polymer with bentonite also increased the adsorption efficiency of methylene blue.

Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol/polylactic acid/titanium dioxide nanocomposite films enhanced by γ-irradiation and its antibacterial activity

Hussein E. Ali et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized antimicrobial films for packaging applications. Biodegradable Poly (PVA/PLA/TiO2) nanocomposite films were prepared by blending PVA and PLA with TiO2 nanoparticles and irradiated by gamma-irradiation. The addition of TiO2 nanoparticles improved the thermal stability and antibacterial activity of the films, while gamma-irradiation enhanced their water resistance and biodegradation property.

A fabrication of CNTs/TiO2/polyurethane films toward antibacterial and protective coatings

Quan Xuan Nguyen et al.

Summary: Steel surfaces are prone to corrosion, especially in natural environments with salt solutions and continuous UV exposure. Researchers have developed a polyurethane coating with TiO2 and carbon nanotubes composites to enhance its protective properties. The coated CT3 steel substrates show excellent antibacterial ability against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and effective protection against corrosion for up to 31 days under harsh environments.

Development of TiO2 photocatalyzed EC/HTPB based oxygen scavenging mats by electrospinning method for packaging applications

Zahra Kordjazi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxygen absorption properties of titanium dioxide photocatalyzed ethyl cellulose/hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene blends, showing that electrospun mats had higher oxygen scavenging capacity compared to cast films, attributed to the greater surface area in the fibrous structure. The addition of hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene to the ethyl cellulose matrix also led to a smoother fibrous structure in the mixture.

Fabrication of cumin seed oil loaded gliadin-ethyl cellulose nanofibers reinforced with adipic acid for food packaging application

Asad Hosseini et al.

Summary: In this study, water-insoluble cumin seed oil (CSO) loaded gliadin (GN)-nanofibers (NFs) mat was successfully prepared using electrospinning method with the addition of ethyl cellulose (EC) and adipic acid (AD). The presence of EC improved the spinnability of GN fibers, while AD acted as a hydrogen bond cross-linker between mixed biopolymers, increasing the viscosity of the polymer solutions. The prepared NFs exhibited strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities without significant toxicity on human cells. The results suggest that the NFs mat has potential for use in active food packaging due to its sustained control release properties for loaded antimicrobial and antioxidant active agents.

Biorenewable, transparent, and oxygen/moisture barrier nanocellulose/nanochitin-based coating on polypropylene for food packaging applications

Hoang-Linh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that coating layers with excellent gas-barrier properties can be assembled on polypropylene films using biorenewable nanocellulose and nanochitin, significantly reducing the transmission of oxygen and water vapors. The resulting coated film is highly transparent, resistant to bacterial adhesion, and thermally recyclable, showing great potential for advanced food packaging applications.

Assessment of the performance of several novel approaches to improve physical properties of guar gum based biopolymer films

Emrah Kirtil et al.

Summary: Biopolymer-based films, particularly those using guar gum, show potential for enhanced physical properties when incorporating orange peel oil and halloysite nanotubes, as well as crosslinking with sodium trimetaphosphate. Despite some decrease in mechanical strength, the addition of oil improves hydrophobicity and water barrier properties, while crosslinking reduces solubility and improves overall film properties.
