Molecular dynamics simulations of key physical properties and microstructure of epoxy resin cured with different curing agents

Shuaijiang Ma et al.

Summary: The molecular structure of curing agents significantly affects the thermomechanical properties of epoxy resins. This study used a molecular dynamics method to investigate the influence of curing agents' molecular structure on the properties of epoxy resin. The results showed that longer molecular chains and smaller polarity groups led to inferior thermomechanical properties, while side-chain groups had a primary effect on the properties.

A nonlinear viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model for adhesives under creep

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a model to describe the nonlinear viscoelastic-viscoplastic behavior of adhesive films in scarf joints, combining a nonlinear viscoelastic model with a viscoplastic model using an iterative scheme and numerical algorithm in finite element analysis. The results showed good agreement with the creep and recovery responses of epoxy adhesive systems, and discussed the contribution of nonlinear viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity to stress/strain distribution.

Summary: This study presents a phenomenological viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model based on CG MD simulations, focusing on the intermolecular interaction of polymer chains. The model, with 10 material parameters, fits well the CG MD simulations of PS under different strain rates.

Development of dynamic constitutive model of epoxy resin considering temperature and strain rate effects using experimental methods

Gang Luo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the compression properties of TDE86 epoxy resin at different temperatures and strain rates, revealing that the elastic modulus, yield stress, and yield strain of the epoxy increase with strain rate but decrease with temperature. The dynamic stress-strain curve of the epoxy can be divided into four stages, and there is no distinct relationship between yield strain and logarithmic strain rate at high strain rates.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics to compute the curing process of an epoxy resin and investigated the influence of reaction cutoff distance on crosslink density. The reaction kinetics were derived from numerical results and compared with experimental methods, showing a good agreement between experiment and simulation.

A Molecular Simulation Approach to Bond Reorganization in Epoxy Resins: From Curing to Deformation and Fracture

Julian Konrad et al.

Summary: Using molecular dynamics simulations, we successfully model the bond formation and dissociation processes in thermosetting polymer networks, demonstrating the importance of bond (re)organization in epoxy resin formation and elucidating the competition process. Additionally, we rationalize the irreversible damage to epoxy polymers caused by mechanical load based on molecular mechanisms.

Assessing the mechanical properties of molecular materials from atomic simulation

Julian Konrad et al.

Summary: This study reviews the methods for deriving mechanical properties from atomic simulations, with a focus on the temperature-dependent characterization of polymer materials. It highlights the strong temperature-dependence of elastic moduli and the viscoelastic behavior caused by nm-scale reorganization during thermal fluctuations. The study suggests pre-processing data with Fourier-filtering before applying Boltzmann-statistics for suitable application of linear-response theory.
