Recent Developments in Artificial Super-Wettable Surfaces Based on Bioinspired Polymeric Materials for Biomedical Applications

Ansar Abbas et al.

Summary: Inspired by nature, significant research efforts have been made to discover various biomaterials for biomedical applications, such as drug development and disease diagnosis. Polymers, as bioinspired materials with extreme wettable properties, have received considerable interest due to their multiple applications in areas such as anti-fogging, anti-icing, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, biosensing, and water transportation. Recently, super-wettable surfaces based on polymeric materials have also shown potential in studying biological processes.

A Facile Method to Prepare Superhydrophobic Coatings for Various Substrates

Yuxuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study fabricated superhydrophobic composite coatings with self-cleaning properties by mixing fluorine resin, carbon nanotubes, and SiO2 nanoparticles. The results showed that the superhydrophobic composite coatings exhibited the best self-cleaning performance and contact angle hysteresis at a mass ratio of CNTs to SiO2 of 2:3 and a nanoparticle addition of 75 wt. %. Furthermore, the coatings demonstrated good chemical resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical stability.

Nanoarchitectonics for polymer-ceramic hybrid coated ceramic tiles for antibacterial activity and wettability

Gokhan Acikbas et al.

Summary: The study developed a polymer-coated and Si3N4-modified glaze to create a synergistic effect of antibacterial and superhydrophobic properties on ceramic tile surface. The unique aspect of the study lies in the unknown antibacterial activity of Si3N4 in the tile industry, and the results showed significant reduction in bacterial populations on the developed surfaces. The formation of superhydrophobic and antibacterial effects was achieved through a micro-nano hybrid surface structure formed by Si3N4 crystals, leading to a water contact angle of 155 degrees and over 99.97% reduction in bacterial population for S. aureus and 99.11% for P. aeruginosa.

Effect of Chemical Surface Texturing on the Superhydrophobic Behavior of Micro-Nano-Roughened AA6082 Surfaces

Amani Khaskhoussi et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic surfaces are achieved on 6082 aluminum alloy substrates using low-cost chemical surface treatments and fluorine-free alkyl-silane coating deposition. Different surface treatments, such as boiling water, HF/HCl, and HNO3/HCl etching, significantly influence the micro-nano structure and wetting behavior. A two-step procedure involving roughening treatment and surface chemical silanization can easily tailor the superhydrophobic behavior of the aluminum alloy surface.

The effect of sintering regime on superhydrophobicity of silicon nitride modified ceramic surfaces

Gokhan Acikbas et al.

Summary: The study focused on developing micro-nano surface morphology using beta-Si3N4 powder and investigating the influence of sintering regimes on ceramic surface properties. Different sintering regimes led to varying surface characteristics, and the highest water contact angle achieved was 166 degrees for samples sintered at 980 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
