Prevalence and associated factors of asymptomatic leishmaniasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Shahnewaj Bin Mannan et al.

Summary: Asymptomatic leishmaniasis is believed to be crucial in maintaining the transmission of Leishmania spp., and efforts to eliminate leishmaniasis depend on effectively managing asymptomatic cases. A meta-analysis of 111 original articles showed a high prevalence of asymptomatic leishmaniasis in endemic areas, with males being more susceptible to developing symptoms. Despite a lack of significant change over the past 40 years, asymptomatic cases remain a significant concern in the global fight against leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniases in the European Union and Neighboring Countries

Eduardo Berriatua et al.

Summary: A questionnaire survey in Europe found that leishmaniases are not universally notifiable in countries with autochthonous cases. Few countries have surveillance and control measures in place for both animal and human infections. Lack of resources is a major challenge for controlling leishmaniases, which are considered emergent diseases in most countries.
