Parameter Uncertainty Quantification in an Idealized GCM With a Seasonal Cycle

Michael F. Howland et al.

Summary: This study develops methods for calibrating and quantifying uncertainty in climate model parameters using the seasonal cycle. The methods are demonstrated with an idealized GCM, and the calibration and uncertainty quantification based on seasonally averaged climate statistics significantly reduces error and narrows posterior distributions compared to annually averaged data, leading to a reduction in climate model prediction uncertainty.

Summary: Many parameter estimation problems can be addressed using Bayesian inversion, where ensemble Kalman inversion methods can provide a derivative-free optimization approach to estimating parameters and quantifying uncertainties. This method is particularly effective when the parameter-to-data map evaluation is expensive and noisy.

Hygroscopic Seeding Effects of Giant Aerosol Particles Simulated by the Lagrangian-Particle-Based Direct Numerical Simulation

Sisi Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that seeding giant particles in turbulent clouds can alter the collision-coalescence process and importance lies in including solute effects. Furthermore, small-scale supersaturation fluctuations have little impact on aerosol activation and droplet condensation in regions without mixing with dry air.

The Physics of Falling Raindrops in Diverse Planetary Atmospheres

Kaitlyn Loftus et al.

Summary: This article discusses the evolution of a single raindrop in different planetary atmospheres and how to calculate its shape, terminal velocity, and evaporation rate. The study found that these characteristics tightly bound the possible size range of raindrops in a given atmosphere, independent of growth mechanisms. A new dimensionless number can capture the raindrop ability to vertically transport latent heat and condensible mass in the atmosphere.

Calibration and Uncertainty Quantification of Convective Parameters in an Idealized GCM

Oliver R. A. Dunbar et al.

Summary: The study introduces a calibrate-emulate-sample (CES) approach for calibrating climate model parameters and quantifying uncertainties. This method consists of calibration, emulation, and sampling stages, offering high computational efficiency and adaptability to internal climate variability.
