A longitudinal study of the effects of problematic smartphone use on social functioning among people with schizophrenia: Mediating roles for sleep quality and self-stigma

Kun-Chia Chang et al.

Summary: This study used a longitudinal design to examine the relationships between problematic smartphone use, sleep quality, self-stigma, and social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. The results showed that problematic smartphone use, poor sleep quality, and self-stigma were significant predictors of social functioning. Furthermore, sleep quality and self-stigma mediated the associations between problematic smartphone use and social functioning. Interventions targeting problematic smartphone use, improving sleep quality, and addressing self-stigma may help improve social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia.

Experiences of friendships of young people with first-episode psychosis: A qualitative study

Catherine Huckle et al.

Summary: The study found that young people with first-episode psychosis often lost social contacts during the illness, either due to their own withdrawal or friends withdrawing as the illness developed. However, the importance of friendships in the recovery process, and the conscious efforts made by participants to rebuild social networks, were also highlighted. Mental health services were seen as having a limited direct role in supporting friendships post-psychosis.
