Prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Asia: a systematic review and analysis

Thaminda Liyanage et al.

Summary: The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) varies greatly in different regions of Asia, with China and India having the highest number of CKD cases. Urgent collaborative action is needed in Asia to prevent and manage CKD and its complications.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Cardiovascular Risk Marker May Be Less Efficient in Women Than in Men

Ljiljana Trtica Majnaric et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, where chronic inflammation plays a crucial role in its development along with insulin resistance and diabetes type 2. Research on sex-specific differences in the lifetime course of NLR is lacking, despite the impact of factors such as aging, menopause, hormonal changes, immune reactions, and inflammation mechanisms on CVD prevalence in both sexes.

Chronic Inflammation in Chronic Kidney Disease Progression: Role of Nrf2

Peter Stenvinkel et al.

Summary: Despite recent advances in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), morbidity and mortality rates in these patients remain high. Chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, hypoxia, senescence, and mitochondrial dysfunction are now recognized as key factors in the etiology and progression of CKD. Various mechanisms, such as NF-KB and Nrf2-mediated gene transcription, regulate the inflammatory response in CKD, impacting glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decline and eventual progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in various kidney diseases.

Body Fat Composition Enhances the Predictive Ability of Changes in White Blood Cell Levels Associated with the Risk of Chronic Disease Development

Jisuk Chae et al.

Summary: The research aimed to revalidate the impact of white blood cells on chronic disease risk factors and identify specific markers independently involved in changes to white blood cell levels in a Korean population. This study found a correlation between white blood cell levels and markers such as adiponectin, triglyceride, and insulin, as well as increased levels of inflammatory markers in subjects with a mild increase in white blood cells. Furthermore, body fat composition data was identified as an important factor in predicting changes in white blood cell levels, indicating the potential for controlling white blood cell levels through managing inflammatory markers and body fat composition.

Chronic kidney disease

Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease with no cure, and preserving kidney function through lifestyle adjustments and pharmacological interventions can improve outcomes. A plant-dominant, low-protein, and low-salt diet may help mitigate glomerular hyperfiltration and preserve renal function. Various pharmacotherapies can also be used to alter intrarenal haemodynamics and protect the kidney from further damage.

New Pandemic: Obesity and Associated Nephropathy

Isha Sharma et al.

Summary: The incidence of obesity-related renal disorders has increased dramatically in recent years, with obesity leading to irreversible kidney damage and progression of kidney disease. Inhibitors of RAAS show short-term effectiveness, while long-term strategies such as weight loss have shown better results in mitigating kidney damage. Studies suggest that fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism play critical roles in renal lipid accumulation and inflammation.
