Get Rid of Mr. Virus: The Effect of Injurant Anthropomorphism on the Intention to Engage in Protective Behavior

Wen-Hsien Huang

Summary: Injurant anthropomorphism, which assigns human characteristics to disease-causing agents, can affect consumer perceptions and decision making. This study shows that in the context of health product promotion, when these injurants are anthropomorphized, participants are more likely to engage in protective behavior. However, the effect disappears if the anthropomorphized injurant triggers a high behavioral immune response or has a crying humanlike face.

Gender Differences in the Relationship Between Exercise, Sleep, and Mood in Young Adults

Emily E. Glavin et al.

Summary: Insufficient sleep is a serious public health problem in college students. The study found that in men, greater exercise frequency is associated with less daytime dysfunction and less depressive mood, while in women, greater exercise frequency is associated with earlier bedtime, improved sleep quality, increased positive affect, less depressive mood, and less anger. Additionally, compared to individuals who met physical activity guidelines, those who did not meet the guidelines reported later bedtimes, less positive affect, more anxiety, and more anger.

The Role of Speech Technology in User Perception and Context Acquisition in HRI

Jorge Wuth et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the role and relevance of speech synthesis and recognition in social robotics, comparing natural synthetic speech with non-linguistic utterances. The importance of understanding robot context and the role of synthetic voice were also evaluated. In experiments with one and two robots, it was found that users prefer synthetic speech over beep-like audio, prefer entering commands by voice, and find the robot voice more influential on perceived capability than voice input.

Summary: Message framing and tailored risk feedback did not have a significant impact on T2D risk perceptions or behavioural intentions in this study, but a brief online T2D risk communication can help to correct risk perceptions and increase behavioural intentions. The findings support the use of online risk assessment and communication to combat the current T2D epidemic, especially in high-risk populations.
