Schistosomiasis outbreak during COVID-19 pandemic in Takum, Northeast Nigeria: Analysis of infection status and associated risk factors

Summary: This study assessed the outbreak of schistosomiasis in Takum local government area, finding a high prevalence of infection, especially in Birama, Barkin Lissa, and Shibong communities. The infection rates were different between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni, with higher proportion of younger males infected. The WASH conditions in the area were poor, and the infections were significantly associated with water contact behaviors.

Acute Schistosomiasis With a Schistosoma mattheei x Schistosoma haematobium Hybrid Species in a Cluster of 34 Travelers Infected in South Africa

Summary: The diagnosis of schistosomiasis in a group of travelers with freshwater exposure in South Africa was evaluated using various diagnostic methods. Results showed that eosinophil count, Schistosoma antibody tests, and PCR assays were effective in confirming the diagnosis, with sequencing identifying a hybrid species. These findings suggest that Dral PCR can confirm the diagnosis at an earlier stage than traditional tests and may be useful in identifying hybrid species.

Evidence of autochthonous transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in Almeria (southeast Spain): An outbreak analysis

Summary: Evidence of autochthonous transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis was presented in Almeria, Spain in 2003, affecting 4 out of 5 farmers who bathed in an irrigation pool. DNA sequencing confirmed that the local vector species were identical to those found in Senegal. Although no new cases have been reported, there may have been unnoticed cases due to asymptomatic or mild symptoms.

Morphological and genomic characterisation of the Schistosoma hybrid infecting humans in Europe reveals admixture between Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis
