Interactions of extracellular DNA with aromatized biochar and protection against degradation by DNase I

Jing Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption, desorption, and degradation behaviors of extracellular DNA (eDNA) on aromatized biochars (BCs) pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C. Results showed that eDNA was irreversibly adsorbed by BCs, with environmental factors such as ionic strength and pH influencing the adsorption process. The findings provide insights for the potential application of biochar in managing eDNA dissemination and evaluating its environmental fate.

Summary: The study found that maize straw biochar and chicken manure biochar performed the best in trapping MCLR, with non-partition sorption domains contributing more to MCLR sorption. Most biochars showed weakened desorption hysteresis with increasing aqueous MCLR amount.

Sorption behaviour of xylene isomers on biochar from a range of feedstock

Hamid Rajabi et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of biochar as a low-cost containment solution for contaminated solids by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was investigated. Experimental results showed that high-temperature biochar with similar surface chemistry had higher sorption efficiency due to porous structure and pore size distribution. Biochar samples with higher specific surface area and volume of mesopores exhibited the highest sorption capacity for xylene isomers. The Elovich kinetic model was found to best describe xylenes' sorption on biochar, indicating pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding as the main mechanism of sorption.

Enhanced adsorptive removal of sulfamethoxazole from water using biochar derived from hydrothermal carbonization of sugarcane bagasse

G. Prasannamedha et al.

Summary: The research focused on producing biochar from sugarcane bagasse through HTC followed by NaOH activation to remove SMX from water. The biochar had a sphere-shaped structure with hydrophobic interior and hydrophilic exterior, with a large surface area and mesopores structure. The adsorption process involved chemical interaction following Elovich model and fit well with Freundlich model. Immobilization of SMX on the biochar surface was achieved through charge-assisted hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interaction.

An overview on engineering the surface area and porosity of biochar

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Surface area and porosity are crucial physical properties of biochar that significantly impact its applications, with biomass composition and pyrolysis temperature being major influencing factors. Activation, particularly through chemical means, is the most effective way to enhance biochar surface area and porosity, while other treatment methods like carbonaceous materials coating and ball milling can also contribute to improvement. Future research should focus on developing treatment technologies to simultaneously enhance the functionality and porous structure of biochar.

Lin Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption kinetics of gallic acid (GA) and tannic acid (TA) on different minerals, revealing that adsorption rates are related to mineral types, specific surface area, and organic molecule size. The adsorption process is diffusion-dependent, with limited influence on TA adsorption kinetics.
