Bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and amygdala responses to unpredictable threat in children

Brandee Feola et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that in children, the amygdala responds significantly to unpredictable threats but the BNST does not. This may indicate that the role of the BNST in threat processing emerges later in development.

Chronic non-discriminatory social defeat stress reduces effort-related motivated behaviors in male and female mice

Andrew Dieterich et al.

Summary: Research suggests that chronic stress can lead to mood disorders in humans and maladaptive reward and motivation behaviors in rodents. While depression is more prevalent in women, there is relatively little known about whether chronic stress elicits maladaptive behaviors in female rodents and potential behavioral sex differences.

Alterations in connectivity of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis during early abstinence in individuals with alcohol use disorder

Elizabeth A. Flook et al.

Summary: This study is the first to demonstrate differences in BNST structural connectivity during early abstinence and revealed key sex differences. Women in early abstinence showed stronger BNST network connectivity compared to control women, with region-specific differences. Exploratory analyses suggested a relationship between alcohol use severity and vmPFC-BNST structural connectivity moderated by sex.

Extended amygdala circuits are differentially activated by context fear conditioning in male and female rats

Louise Urien et al.

Summary: The study focused on the role of BNST-AL in fear expression in male rats, revealing an upregulation of the ARC gene in BNST-AL specifically in male rats during fear expression. Excitotoxic lesions of the BNST reduced context fear expression in both sexes, suggesting that females may recruit different BNST subnuclei for fear and anxiety-like behaviors.

BNST and amygdala connectivity are altered during threat anticipation in schizophrenia

Brandee Feola et al.

Summary: The study examined the function and connectivity of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) in individuals with schizophrenia, especially those with comorbid anxiety disorders. Compared to controls, individuals with schizophrenia showed stronger connectivity in specific brain regions during anticipation of unpredictable and predictable threats, with broader patterns of altered connectivity observed in schizophrenia patients with comorbid anxiety disorders.

Differential mechanisms of synaptic plasticity for susceptibility and resilience to chronic social defeat stress in male mice

Chi-Wei Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that mice in the susceptible group exhibited depression-like behavior after exposure to chronic social defeat stress, while stress-resistant mice did not. In the susceptible group, high-frequency stimulation-induced long-term potentiation (LTP) was impaired, and levels of certain proteins related to synaptic plasticity were reduced compared to stress-resistant mice.
