National mapping and estimation of forest area by dominant tree species using Sentinel-2 data

Johannes Breidenbach et al.

Summary: Nation-wide Sentinel-2 mosaics were used with National Forest Inventory plot data to model and map forests dominated by spruce, pine, and deciduous trees in Norway. The best model achieved accuracies ranging from 74% to 87%. The produced map was used to generate improved estimates of forest area at the national level, with up to 90% increase in efficiency, as well as for municipalities where efficiencies improved by up to a factor of 8.

How to recognize different types of trees from quite a long way away: combining UAV and spaceborne imagery for stand-level tree species identification

Adam H. Sprott et al.

Summary: By combining satellite imagery with UAV data, researchers have successfully classified and mapped canopy composition of tree species with high accuracy. Manual delineation of dense tree stands in UAV imagery, extraction of training samples, fuzzy membership analysis, and verification resulted in satisfactory overall accuracy.

Exploring the potential of land surface phenology and seasonal cloud free composites of one year of Sentinel-2 imagery for tree species mapping in a mountainous region

Andreas Kollert et al.

Summary: The study uses Sentinel-2 imagery to map five different tree species groups in a large part of the Province of Tyrol, Austria, improving the accuracy of tree species mapping. The research suggests that multitemporal imagery can help enhance mapping accuracy, but it is necessary to develop diverse datasets and methods to support tree species classification under challenging conditions such as cloud cover.

Topography-dependent climatic sensitivities in spruce tree growth in the Changbai Mountain, Northeast China

Shoule Wang et al.

Summary: The study explores the variations of spruce growth in response to climate change in the Changbai Mountain, Northeast China, noting an abrupt decline in sensitivity to temperature under global warming. Different slopes exhibit different relationships between spruce growth and climate, with positive correlations with spring temperature on the south-facing slope and negative correlations with precipitation on the north- and west-facing slopes. Despite the declining sensitivity to temperature, the relationships between spruce growth and climate variables have shifted over time, making it difficult to precisely determine the effects of climate change on spruce growth across different slopes.

Tree species classification using Sentinel-2 imagery and Bayesian inference

Arvid Axelsson et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Bayesian inference can achieve high and stable accuracy in tree species classification. By combining multiple Sentinel-2 images, a higher accuracy can be achieved. The method is applicable in areas where data are incomplete.
