Convergent Validity of Ratings of Perceived Exertion During Resistance Exercise in Healthy Participants: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

John W. D. Lea et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examines the validity of RPE as a measure of resistance exercise intensity and physiological exertion. The results show that RPE is a valid measure and can be used to prescribe and monitor resistance exercise training.

Effectiveness of Adding a Large Dose of Shoulder Strengthening to Current Nonoperative Care for Subacromial Impingement A Pragmatic, Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial (SExSI Trial)

Mikkel Bek Clausen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adding a large dose of shoulder strengthening to current nonoperative care for subacromial impingement compared to usual care alone. The results showed that adding more exercise did not improve shoulder-specific patient-reported outcomes, with nearly half of the patients still experiencing unacceptable symptoms after 4 months of nonoperative care.

Progressive exercise compared with best-practice advice, with or without corticosteroid injection, for rotator cuff disorders: the GRASP factorial RCT

Sally Hopewell et al.

Summary: This study compared the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of progressive exercise with best-practice physiotherapy advice, with or without corticosteroid injections, in adults with rotator cuff disorders. The results showed that progressive exercise alone was not superior to a single best-practice advice session with a physiotherapist. Corticosteroid injections improved shoulder pain and function in the short term, but did not provide long-term benefits over 12 months. Best-practice advice combined with corticosteroid injections was expected to be the most cost-effective treatment option, although there was uncertainty.

Progressive exercise compared with best practice advice, with or without corticosteroid injection, for the treatment of patients with rotator cuff disorders (GRASP): a multicentre, pragmatic, 2 x 2 factorial, randomised controlled trial

Sally Hopewell et al.

Summary: This study compared the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a progressive exercise programme with physiotherapy advice for rotator cuff disorders, and found no significant difference in improvement over 12 months. Additionally, corticosteroid injections did not provide any long-term benefits to patients with rotator cuff disorders.

Adherence to self-managed exercises for patients with persistent subacromial pain: the Ad-Shoulder feasibility study

Daniel H. Major et al.

Summary: A feasibility study was conducted in patients with subacromial pain, showing low adherence to home exercise programmes among some participants while good fidelity of the intervention by physiotherapists. Overall recruitment and adherence to self-managed exercise programmes were below anticipated levels.

Comparative effectiveness of treatment options for subacromial shoulder conditions: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Opeyemi O. Babatunde et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the comparative effectiveness of treatment options for patients with subacromial shoulder conditions. Results showed small to moderate effect sizes for most treatment options, with six treatments having the highest probability of being most effective in the short term, but with low certainty for most options. Exercise was found to have a moderate certainty of comparative effects on function in patients with SSCs. Future high-quality studies are needed to better understand treatment effectiveness in specific patient subgroups.
