Environmental Correlates of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Self-Rated Health in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Daniel Stevens et al.

Summary: The study found a significant negative correlation between PA level and ozone pollution, a significant association between urban form index and sedentary behavior, a significant positive correlation between self-rated health and PA level, and a significant inverse correlation between self-rated health and sedentary behavior among COPD patients.

Embedding a Behavior Change Program Designed to Reduce Sedentary Time Within a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Is Feasible in People With COPD

Adnan Wshah et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of embedding a 4-week intervention into a pulmonary rehabilitation program for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results showed that most participants were able to complete the intervention and were satisfied with it, but the impact on sedentary time was unclear.

Six-week behaviour change intervention to reduce sedentary behaviour in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a randomised controlled trial

Sonia Wing Mei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that a 6-week behavior change intervention did not reduce time spent in sedentary behavior compared with a sham intervention in people with stable moderate-to-severe COPD prior to pulmonary rehabilitation.

Global Initiative for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease The 2020 GOLD Science Committee Report on COVID-19 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

David M. G. Halpin et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about managing COPD patients and whether therapy adjustments are needed. The GOLD Science Committee provided an overview of COPD management during the pandemic, recommending caution with spirometry and maintaining infection control measures. Patients with COPD should continue their usual treatment but be monitored more closely if they develop moderate to severe COVID-19.

Behavioural modification interventions alongside pulmonary rehabilitation improve COPD patients' experiences of physical activity

Matthew Armstrong et al.

Summary: Combining physical activity behavioral modification interventions with pulmonary rehabilitation can improve the experiences of physical activity in COPD patients with low baseline physical activity levels, showing clinically important improvements in C-PPAC scores and CAT scores.

The ability of physical activity in reducing mortality risks and cardiovascular loading and in extending life expectancy in patients with COPD

Chin-Chung Shu et al.

Summary: The study found that COPD increases all-cause mortality and decreases life expectancy, but maintaining sufficient physical activity can reduce mortality risk and improve heart rate, extending life expectancy.

Sociodemographic Characteristics and Physical Activity in Patients with COPD: A 3-Month Cohort Study

Alex G. Dragnich et al.

Summary: Decreased physical activity is associated with morbidity and mortality in COPD patients. Factors such as living with others, older age, and race can influence daily step count and physical activity levels in these patients. Understanding the role of social networks and support may aid in developing interventions to improve physical activity in COPD.

Mechanisms, Pathophysiology and Currently Proposed Treatments of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Sarah de Oliveira Rodrigues et al.

Summary: COPD, primarily caused by cigarette smoke, is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality characterized by progressive airflow obstruction. Existing treatments such as inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators are ineffective in halting disease progression, highlighting the need for specific and effective therapeutic alternatives targeting oxidative imbalance.

Objectively Measured Physical Activity as a COPD Clinical Trial Outcome

Chris Burtin et al.

Summary: Evidence on the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions to enhance objectively measured physical activity in COPD patients is limited, with only one-third of clinical trials meeting preset criteria for physical activity assessment. Studies showed variable effects on physical activity even when investigating similar interventions.

Summary: Low levels of physical activity have been observed in a significant proportion of COPD patients in Latin America, particularly in women and older patients, and are associated with poorer functional and clinical characteristics.

The Influence of Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Counselling on Perceptions of Physical Activity in Individuals with COPD-A Qualitative Study

Mandy Scheermesser et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore how a combined counselling and pulmonary rehabilitation program affects COPD patients' perception of physical activity and motivation for behavior change. Findings revealed four types of individuals with COPD based on their activity perceptions, motivation, and coping strategies. Recognizing and tailoring interventions according to these types are crucial for improving outpatient PR programs.

The can do, do do concept in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: an exploration of psychological mechanisms

J. Carl et al.

Summary: This study explored the role of psychological variables in physical activity among COPD patients within the can do, do do quadrant concept. Important psychological and competence-oriented variables were identified, explaining discrepancies in the quadrant concept. Depression scores, fear avoidance behaviors, disease-specific anxiety, and indicators of physical activity-related health competence effectively discriminated between more and less active individuals, depending on their relative physical capacity levels.
