Influence of the interfacial tension on the microstructural and mechanical properties of microgels at fluid interfaces

Jacopo Vialetto et al.

Summary: Microgels are soft colloidal particles with high potential for applications, particularly in foam and emulsion stabilization and surface patterning. By comparing organic fluid phases with different interfacial tension values, the deformation of adsorbed microgels can be adjusted, leading to varying structural and mechanical responses of the monolayers. This offers additional control to customize the 2D assembly of soft particles for fine-tuning particle size and mechanical properties.

Non-covalent reconfigurable microgel colloidosomes with a well-defined bilayer shell

Xin Guan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method to control the formation of microgel-laden interfacial layers by introducing octanol into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) (PNIPAM-co-MAA) microgels. The resulting octanol-swollen microgels can diffuse onto water droplet surfaces, leading to the formation of stable inverse water-in-oil Pickering emulsions. These emulsions can be used as templates to create microgel colloidosomes with adjustable shell structures. The microgelsomes have the ability to encapsulate and release various substances and can respond to external stimuli.

Engineering hybrid microgels as particulate emulsifiers for reversible Pickering emulsions

Hang Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper successfully fabricated a hybrid poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based microgel with tunable wettability from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity through temperature regulation. By synthesizing engineered microgels in inverse emulsions stabilized with hydrophobic silica nanoparticles and utilizing swelling-induced feature, the microgel can undergo phase inversion with temperature change, stabilizing Pickering emulsions and achieving stability of water-in-oil emulsions with encapsulated enzymes.

Attractive Pickering Emulsion Gels

Baiheng Wu et al.

Summary: By bridging neighboring particle-stabilized droplets via telechelic polymers, attractive Pickering emulsion gels (APEGs) are designed and prepared. These gels exhibit typical shear-thinning behaviors and their viscoelastic properties can be tuned by temperature, pH, and molecular weight of the telechelic polymers, making them ideal for direct 3D printing. The APEGs can be photopolymerized to prepare APEG-templated porous materials with tailored microstructures for optimized performances, showing promise for a wide range of applications.
