Summary: The catalytic activity of vanadyl pyrophosphate (VPP) catalysts supported on mesoporous silica KIT-6 for glucose and fructose dehydration into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was investigated, and the catalyst with the lowest VPP loading exhibited the best activity. Various parameters such as VPP loading amount, initial amount of carbohydrates and catalyst, and reaction conditions were found to have an impact on the catalytic activity.

Carbohydrate-based aqueous biphasic systems for biomolecules extraction

Nosaibah Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the solute partitioning behavior in biocompatible carbohydrate-polymer aqueous biphasic systems, revealing different partitioning patterns for various biomolecules. The results showed that the log K values of all target biomolecules linearly increased with decreasing water content ratio, affecting the selectivity index. Additionally, the partitioning behavior of curcumin in carbohydrate-propanol ABSs was explored, indicating that carbohydrate-PPG ABSs exhibited higher selectivity for the alkaloids studied.

Summary: A cold-induced homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction method combined with deep eutectic solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was developed for the extraction of endocrine disrupting compounds and hydroxymethylfurfural from honey samples. The method showed low limits of detection, wide linear ranges, and acceptable repeatability. The developed method successfully detected bisphenol A, p-nitrophenol, and hydroxymethylfurfural in some of the honey samples.

Summary: In this study, a combined in silico and experimental approach was used to investigate the extraction of furfural and HMF in aqueous-organic biphasic systems. The experimental data were found to be in good agreement with the predictions from the COSMO-RS model, and a selective extraction of furfural was demonstrated using an additional extraction step. The molecular nature of preferential furfural extraction was rationalized using COSMO-RS sigma-profile analysis.
