Wildfire Damage Assessment over Australia Using Sentinel-2 Imagery and MODIS Land Cover Product within the Google Earth Engine Cloud Platform

Seyd Teymoor Seydi et al.

Summary: Wildfires are significant natural disasters that have a negative impact on human safety, natural ecosystems, and wildlife. Remote Sensing (RS) images are valuable resources for timely and accurate estimation of wildfire burn areas due to their wide coverage, high spatial and temporal resolution, and low cost. In this study, an estimation framework based on change analysis using Sentinel-2 imagery and MODIS products within the Google Earth Engine platform was implemented to detect and measure burned areas in Australia with high accuracy.

Mapping Bioclimatic Indices by Downscaling MODIS Land Surface Temperature: Case Study of the Saint-Emilion Area

Gwenael Morin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential of using land surface temperature (LST) for modeling thermal conditions, with results showing comparable bioclimatic indices between LST and air temperature calculations. By downscaling the MODIS time series on a daily and weekly basis, the study identified an optimal resolution between 500 m and 250 m for practical application in viticulture, reducing bias.

Use time series NDVI and EVI to develop dynamic crop growth metrics for yield modeling

Sadia Alam Shammi et al.

Summary: This study introduced new crop growth metrics based on NDVI and EVI, which were found to be effective for monitoring crop growth and modeling yield, particularly for soybean in Mississippi Delta. The models based on NDVI-derived VGM85 and EVI-derived VGMmax showed the best fit for linear yield modeling in this region.

Drivers and trade-offs of multiple environmental stressors from global rice

Fabio Sporchia et al.

Summary: Rice production worldwide saw slight growth in water and land use as well as CH4 emissions from 2000 to 2016, but significant improvements in production efficiency led to substantial savings in water resources, land, and emissions. Domestic consumption covered the majority share (94%) while international trade played a less significant role (6%), although it was relevant for some Asian and African countries. Increasing yield by 0.5 tonnes/ha resulted in a global reduction of about 10% for each environmental stressor, suggesting potential trade-offs among them.

Satellite-based evaluation of temporal change in cultivated land in Southern Punjab (Multan region) through dynamics of vegetation and land surface temperature

Sajjad Hussain et al.

Summary: The rapid urbanization has significant impacts on cropping patterns and land use/land cover (LULC) in Southern Punjab, Pakistan, increasing land surface temperature (LST) by replacing vegetation areas with built-up areas. Using remote sensing data, the study found that built-up areas increased, vegetation index decreased, and there was a negative correlation between NDVI and LST.

An evaluation of Landsat, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1 and MODIS data for crop type mapping

Xiao-Peng Song et al.

Summary: In this study, the utility of Landsat, Sentinel, and MODIS satellite data for mapping corn and soybean in the United States was evaluated. Results showed that individual satellite/sensor data could reach accuracies of 94.8-96.8%, while combining all data improved accuracy to 97.0%. Landsat was identified as most useful for soybean classification, Sentinel-2 for corn, and optical data were preferred over SAR data.
