Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus Seropositive Bactrian Camels, Mongolia

Dashzeveg Bold et al.

Summary: MERS-CoV is a zoonotic disease first identified in humans in 2012 in Saudi Arabia, causing acute respiratory disease with a mortality rate around 35%. Dromedary camels are natural hosts, but in Mongolia, no MERS-CoV or specific antibodies were found in Bactrian camels. Antibodies detected in Mongolian camels were non-neutralizing or against a MERS-CoV-like virus.

Type I and III IFNs produced by the nasal epithelia and dimmed inflammation are features of alpacas resolving MERS-CoV infection

Nigeer Te et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of innate immune responses in controlling MERS-CoV infection in camelids, such as alpacas, by triggering interferon responses and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the nasal mucosa. This effective immune response leads to rapid virus clearance without causing tissue damage, emphasizing the potential for developing antiviral drugs and vaccines based on understanding asymptomatic host reservoir responses.

Low-Level Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus among Camel Handlers, Kenya, 2019

Peninah M. Munyua et al.

Summary: Although the seroprevalence of Middle East respiratory coronavirus syndrome is high among camels in Africa, zoonotic transmission has not been detected in Kenya. A study following 262 camel handlers in Kenya from April 2018 to March 2020 found 3 asymptomatic handlers with PCR-confirmed Middle East respiratory coronavirus syndrome.
