Assessment of real life eating difficulties in Parkinson's disease patients by measuring plate to mouth movement elongation with inertial sensors

Konstantinos Kyritsis et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder with both motor and non-motor symptoms, commonly associated with eating behavior and energy intake issues. This study introduces Plate-to-Mouth (PtM) as an objective eating behavior indicator, utilizing signals from a smartwatch to estimate the time taken for food transfer during meals. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of PtM in classifying eating behavior profiles of PD patients and healthy controls, using both clinical and in-the-wild datasets.

Gait speed in clinical and daily living assessments in Parkinson's disease patients: performance versus capacity

Arash Atrsaei et al.

Summary: The study found that Parkinson's disease patients have similar gait speed patterns in clinic and real-life conditions, and there is a moderate correlation between medication dosage and the difference between the two. During home assessments, only about 3% of strides had speeds equal or greater than those in the clinic, occurring mainly during long walking bouts before noon, around 26 minutes after medication intake, peaking 3 hours after Levodopa intake. These results suggest the potential for better controlling medication intake in PD patients by considering both functional capacity and continuous monitoring of gait speed in real-life conditions.

A Phase II Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Prasinezumab in Early Parkinson's Disease (PASADENA): Rationale, Design, and Baseline Data

Gennaro Pagano et al.

Summary: The PASADENA study is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled treatment study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of prasinezumab in individuals with early Parkinson's disease. The study involves a 52-week treatment period followed by a 52-week extension phase to investigate the potential of the drug to slow disease progression. Baseline characteristics and severity of symptoms were similar between treatment-naive and MAO-B inhibitor-treated PASADENA cohorts, as well as compared to the PPMI population.
