Swallowing in individuals with disorders of consciousness: A cohort study

Evelyneu Melotte et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate dysphagia in individuals with disorders of consciousness (DOC) and found that almost all DOC individuals had severe dysphagia, with components of swallowing such as tracheostomy, cough reflex, and efficacy of the oral phase related to consciousness level. Specifically, the absence of an efficient oral phase in UWS participants suggests a lack of consciousness, while specific care is needed to treat severe dysphagia in DOC individuals.

A multi-domain prognostic model of disorder of consciousness using resting-state fMRI and laboratory parameters

Multi-center study on overall clinical complexity of patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness of different etiologies

A. Estraneo et al.

Summary: The study assessed the overall clinical complexity of patients with acquired disorders of consciousness (DoC) and found that patients with non-traumatic etiology had higher complexity compared to traumatic etiology patients. Patients with anoxic etiology had higher complexity and greater need for medical devices. Overall clinical complexity was significantly higher in patients with vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) compared to minimally conscious state (MCS).

Explainable AI: A Review of Machine Learning Interpretability Methods

Pantelis Linardatos et al.

Summary: Recent advances in artificial intelligence have led to widespread industrial adoption, with machine learning systems demonstrating superhuman performance. However, the complexity of these systems has made them difficult to explain, hindering their application in sensitive domains. Therefore, there is a renewed interest in the field of explainable artificial intelligence.

Predicting Outcome of Acquired Brain Injury by the Evolution of Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity Signs

Lucia F. Lucca et al.

Summary: This multi-center study evaluated the clinical variability associated with paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) in acquired brain injury (ABI) patients. Machine learning was used to identify predictive models, with PSH-AM scores, neurological diagnosis, CRS-r, and RLAS scores being crucial factors in outcomes. The study demonstrates PSH's predictive value compared to other clinical measures.

Data-driven prediction of decannulation probability and timing in patients with severe acquired brain injury

Andrea Mannini et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed a data-driven model to predict decannulation probability and timing for patients with severe acquired brain injuries, providing decision support in clinical practice. The model showed good performance in predicting decannulation probability and timing, with significant improvement compared to guessing decannulation timing.
