Common dolphins, common in neritic waters off southern Israel, demonstrate uncommon dietary habits

Denna Brand et al.

Summary: In the past decade, common dolphins in Israeli coastal waters have become the second most sighted species after common bottlenose dolphins. They are mainly found in the southern part of the coast in relatively large groups, often with young calves. Their diet is primarily composed of Balearic eels, similar to the common bottlenose dolphins, and they may forage in association with bottom trawlers. However, there are still gaps in information regarding common dolphins, such as their range extension to the south/south-west, abundance estimation, and genetic flow/isolation.

Energetic Effects of Whale-Watching Boats on Humpback Whales on a Breeding Ground

Damian Villagra et al.

Summary: The presence of whale-watching boats led to increased swimming speed and decreased cost of transport for humpback whales in the breeding grounds of northern Peru. However, there were no significant differences in breath frequency. The study suggests implementing regulations to limit the number of boats interacting with the same group of humpback whales to protect them from disturbance.

Baleen whale prey consumption based on high-resolution foraging measurements

Matthew S. Savoca et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the consumption of krill by whales is much larger than previously thought, with some ecosystems underestimating it by threefold or more. By using 3D whale locations and acoustic measurements of prey density, researchers were able to calculate the prey consumption at daily to annual scales, revealing the significant impact of baleen whales on ecosystem function and nutrient recycling. This suggests that the recovery of baleen whales and their nutrient recycling services could potentially enhance productivity and restore lost ecosystem function caused by 20th century whaling.

Defining priority areas for blue whale conservation and investigating overlap with vessel traffic in Chilean Patagonia, using a fast-fitting movement model

Luis Bedrinana-Romano et al.

Summary: This study focuses on assessing environmental habitat selection drivers and priority conservation areas for blue whales in northern Chilean Patagonia (NCP), as well as overlap with vessel traffic. By combining movement and density modeling approaches, the research provides stronger support for purported priority areas for blue whale conservation and identifies potential areas for vessel-whale interactions within NCP.

Impacts of Whale-Watching on the Short-Term Behavior of Fin Whales (Balaenoptera physalus) in a Marine Protected Area in the Southeastern Pacific

Macarena Santos-Carvallo et al.

Summary: Whale-watching activity has been increasing globally, impacting the behavior patterns of cetaceans like fin whales. The study found that the presence of whale-watching boats caused fin whales to exhibit more erratic and sinuous movements, while they tended to swim in straighter trajectories when resting as the number of boats increased.

Challenges and opportunities for the conservation of marine mammals in the Southeast Pacific with the entry into force of the US Marine Mammal Protection Act

Fernando Felix et al.

Summary: The Fish and Fish Products Import Provisions of the United States Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) could pose significant challenges to countries like Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, which export fish products to the U.S. market. These countries need to meet regulatory standards comparable to those of the U.S. and take steps to reduce impacts on marine mammals as they may be subject to commercial restrictions under the MMPA.

Temporal and spatial lags between wind, coastal upwelling, and blue whale occurrence

Dawn R. Barlow et al.

Summary: This study looks into the relationship between wind speed and the occurrence of blue whales in the South Taranaki Bight region of New Zealand, finding increasing lag times between wind speed and sea surface temperature. The results indicate that the lag time is closely related to the changes in wind speed and temperature, which in turn impact the aggregation of blue whales.

The interplay of natural variability, productivity and management of the benthic ecosystem in the Humboldt Current System: Twenty years of assessment of Concholepas concholepas fishery under a TURF management system

Jorge E. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Controlled access areas, such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Territorial Use Rights for Fisheries (TURF), are tools aimed at contributing to ecosystem conservation and fisheries sustainability. The study of the Management and Exploitation Areas for Benthic Resources (MEABR) in Chile revealed that ecosystem indexes increased primarily in response to changes in environmental conditions and their effects on community interactions, indicating the importance of considering ecological factors in resource management.
