Epidemiology, Presentation, and Diagnosis of Celiac Disease

Benjamin Lebwohl et al.

Summary: The incidence of celiac disease is increasing due to both improved recognition and a real increase of the disorder. The reasons for this true rise are unclear, but may be related to environmental factors. Early-life gluten exposure is a major focus of prevention efforts.

Symptoms and biomarkers associated with undiagnosed celiac seropositivity

Line Lund Karhus et al.

Summary: Undiagnosed celiac seropositivity did not show more symptoms than controls in this general population study, highlighting the diagnostic challenges of celiac disease and the limited predictive value of symptoms for diagnosis. Additionally, decreased levels of cholesterol and/or hemoglobin in the blood were associated with undiagnosed celiac seropositivity.

Summary: A new IHC method has been developed to reliably detect and quantify gamma delta-IELs in FFPE duodenal biopsies, showing excellent specificity and sensitivity for celiac disease. This new method is a promising addition to the routine histopathologic assessment of celiac disease.
