Structure and phase transformations in gas atomized AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy powders

Dennis Karlsson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystal structure and phase stability of gas atomized equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi powder, revealing that high entropy phase is stable only at very high temperatures and multiple phases are stable at lower temperatures. The B2 phase decomposes into fcc and sigma phases during heat-treatment, with phase composition dependent on heating rate and powder particle size fraction. Sintering of green bodies shows that the starting material's phase composition impacts final phase composition and microstructure of sintered components, emphasizing the importance of well-defined powder materials for powder consolidation, particularly for additive manufacturing of high entropy alloys.

Comparison of two calculation models for high entropy alloys: Virtual crystal approximation and special quasi-random structure

Shen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the suitable range of virtual crystal approximation (VCA) and special quasi-random structure (SQS) for estimating lattice constants (LCs) of high entropy alloys (HEAs). It was found that for HEAs composed of atoms with similar properties, VCA method can replace SQS method to increase computation efficiency.

First-principles-based high-throughput computation for high entropy alloys with short range order

V. Sorkin et al.

Summary: The SSOS method is extended to calculate properties of high entropy alloys with short range order, showing good agreement with the SQS method results and significantly lower computational cost. Machine learning methods can further reduce the computational cost of the SSOS method while maintaining accuracy, making it suitable for high-throughput calculations of HEAs with SRO.

High-throughput calculations based on the small set of ordered structures method for non-equimolar high entropy alloys

V Sorkin et al.

Summary: The study extends the small set of ordered structures (SSOS) method initially developed for equimolar high entropy alloys to non-equimolar HEAs. It demonstrates the method's effectiveness in non-equimolar HEAs and proposes an averaging scheme to deal with the non-uniqueness of the solutions. Validation against predictions for a selected set of compositions shows that the SSOS method is fast and accurate for high-throughput DFT computations.

Effect of crystal structure and grain size on corrosion properties of AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy

Abhinav Parakh et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys (HEAs) have unique properties that make them attractive for various applications. This study investigated the corrosion resistance of AlCoCrFeNi HEA and found that the FeCr+Ni+Al+Co alloy sequence exhibited nearly optimal corrosion resistance. Additionally, increasing grain size was found to improve corrosion resistance.

Prediction of mechanical and thermo-physical properties of (Nb-Ti-V-Zr)C high entropy ceramics: A first principles study

Zhihao Huang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the effect of different components on the structural, mechanical, and thermo-physical properties of (Nb-Ti-V-Zr)C crystalline high entropy ceramics using first principles calculations and quasi-harmonic Debye-Griineisen model. The results showed that the VCA scheme was suitable for random (Nb-Ti-V-Zr)C CHECs, and the influence of the concentration of different metallic elements on thermo-physical properties was discussed in detail.

Summary: In this study, a metaheuristic hybrid Cuckoo search (CS) method was used to construct alloy configurational models for high-entropy alloys, enabling efficient computational alloy design. The method allows for global solutions for large, discrete combinatorial optimization problems and has potential applications in real alloys with targeted atomic short-range order.
