Cadmium adsorption performance and mechanism from aqueous solution using red mud modified with amorphous MnO2

Yin Pang et al.

Summary: In this study, red mud modified by manganese dioxide (MRM) was used as an effective adsorbent for removing Cd2+ from aqueous solutions. The MRM had a larger specific surface area and pore volume compared to ordinary red mud (RM). The adsorption experiments showed that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MRM for Cd2+ was significantly higher than that of RM. The kinetic and thermodynamic studies suggested that the adsorption process was controlled by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was heat-trapping and spontaneous. XPS and FTIR analyses indicated that the adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic attachment, specific adsorption, and ion exchange. Therefore, MRM could be a promising and cost-effective alternative for Cd2+ removal in wastewater treatment.

Infrared spectra of surface nitrates: Revision of the current opinions based on the case study of ceria

M. Y. Mihaylov et al.

Summary: The structures of nitrates formed on ceria surface were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy and DFT methods, with isotope labelling utilized to strengthen the conclusions. It was found that monodentate nitrates were actually tridentate nitrates with C-2v symmetry, and bidentate nitrates typically bridge and chelate cerium cations. The spectral differences between these species are due to binding geometry and symmetry reduction.

Magnetically tuning microwave propagation parameters in ferrofluids

P. C. Fannin et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microwave propagation parameters of a kerosene-based ferrofluid with magnetite particles, introducing a comprehensive reflection coefficient to account for the attenuation and reflection within the material. The study determines a set of meaningful microwave propagation parameters based on measured relative magnetic permeability and dielectric permittivity, providing simplified formulas and suggesting potential applications of the results. The connection between theory and experimental results offers insights for the design of microwave applications using ferrofluids or similar materials with magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in a dielectric matrix.

Assessment of the Different Type of Materials Used for Removing Phosphorus from Wastewater

Claudiu Cepan et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of magnetic, semiconductor, and composite materials as adsorbents for phosphorus removal from wastewater. The results showed that these materials had higher phosphorus adsorption efficiency compared to chemical methods, with specific surface area playing a significant role in the adsorption process. EDS analysis was used to study the composition and changes in elements in the substrates before and after reacting with wastewater.

The selective adsorption performance and mechanism of multiwall magnetic carbon nanotubes for heavy metals in wastewater

Zhongbing Wang et al.

Summary: A new type of recyclable adsorbent, 6O-MWCNTs@Fe3O4, with excellent adsorption performance has been synthesized in this study, which can efficiently treat heavy metal ions in wastewater. The modification with magnetic nanoparticles not only inherits the advantages of multiwall carbon nanotubes, but also enhances the adsorption capacity and facilitates the magnetic separation and recovery of heavy metals.

Remediation of Emerging Heavy Metals from Water Using Natural Adsorbent: Adsorption Performance and Mechanistic Insights

Mehak Nawaz Khan et al.

Summary: The research utilized activated biochar produced from wheat straw using chemical oxidation as a natural adsorbent to remediate heavy metal contamination in water. The study showed that the biochar had maximum adsorption efficiency for cadmium and lead at neutral pH, with adsorption capacities of 8.85 and 9.03 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption data followed Langmuir model and pseudo 2nd order kinetics model, indicating a monolayer adsorption and chemisorption nature. Thermodynamic study revealed different processes for Cd and Pb adsorption.

Adsorption Performance of Amino Functionalized Magnetic Molecular Sieve Adsorbent for Effective Removal of Lead Ion from Aqueous Solution

Chuanen Guo et al.

Summary: This study focused on the preparation of NH2-CoFe2O4/SBA-15 adsorbent for effective removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were studied, showing that adsorption followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and Freundlich model. Thermodynamic investigations revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The prepared adsorbent exhibited superior anti-interference performance and reusability, indicating potential for practical water treatment applications. This research may also serve as a reference for the study of other heavy metal ions.
