Australia as a global sink for the genetic diversity of avian influenza A virus

Michelle Wille et al.

Summary: This study used sequencing and analysis to investigate the ecology and evolution of avian influenza A virus (AIV) in wild birds in the southern hemisphere, particularly in Australia. The results showed that Australia is a global sink for AIV diversity and has distinct AIV dynamics compared to the northern hemisphere. The study also found evidence of introductions of AIV by migratory shorebirds and high levels of virus gene segment reassortment. These findings highlight the importance of understanding AIV dynamics in the southern hemisphere.

A comparison of amplification methods to detect Avian Influenza viruses in California wetlands targeted via remote sensing of waterfowl

Madeline M. McCuen et al.

Summary: The study identified two high waterfowl density areas in California using NEXRAD and tested the efficacy of two ultrafiltration methods and two nucleic acid based AIv detection assays. Whole-segment amplification and long-read sequencing were more effective at detecting AIv compared to standard methods. The study also found mismatches between published primers and samples which could lead to a failure in detecting many of the currently sequenced AIv genomes in public databases.

Nanopore sequencing as a rapid tool for identification and pathotyping of avian influenza A viruses

Beate M. Crossley et al.

Summary: This study conducted whole-genome sequencing of influenza A virus (IAV) using MinION technology, showing high diagnostic sensitivity and accuracy in clinical samples from wild waterfowl, commercial poultry, and swine. Results demonstrated concordance between sequences obtained by MinION and Sanger sequencing methods, as well as reproducibility across different laboratories with >=99.8% consistency in the entirety of the IAV genomes sequenced.

When poultry take a sick leave: Response costs for the 2014-2015 highly pathogenic avian influenza epidemic in the USA

Riley M. Seeger et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the response costs of the 2014-2015 HPAI epidemic, highlighting the importance of local and state policies and resources on farm level eradication costs, as well as the sensitivity of on-farm response costs to bird inventory size. The characteristics of responders were found to impact the incremental cost for each additional bird during depopulation activities.
