The Early Impact of COVID-19 on Chronic Pain: A Cross-Sectional Investigation of a Large Online Sample of Individuals with Chronic Pain in the United States, April to May, 2020

Chung Jung Mun et al.

Summary: This study found that around 25-30% of individuals with chronic pain reported exacerbation in pain severity and pain interference during the COVID-19 pandemic. Factors such as being Black and of non-Hispanic origin, as well as experiencing disruptions in mood and sleep quality, were associated with worsened pain interference. Most participants reported using self-management strategies as usual, but many chronic pain treatment appointments were postponed or canceled, with concerns about accessing prescription opioids due to COVID-19.

A Brief Psychological Intervention for Chronic Pain in Primary Care: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Lisa R. Miller-Matero et al.

Summary: This study examined the preliminary outcomes of a brief psychological intervention for chronic pain delivered in primary care. Results showed improvements in pain severity, pain interference, pain catastrophizing, and depression, indicating that shorter-term psychological interventions may offer similar benefits as longer-term ones. Offering a brief intervention in primary care may also increase access and engagement in behavioral pain management services.

Adverse effects of COVID-19-related lockdown on pain, physical activity and psychological well-being in people with chronic pain

Nicholas Fallon et al.

Summary: Lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted individuals with chronic pain, leading to increased pain severity and psychological distress. Pain catastrophising was found to be a key factor in self-perceived pain increases, mediating the relationship between mood and pain levels. Efforts to reduce pain catastrophising and promote health behaviors such as physical activity through remote pain management could benefit this vulnerable population.
