Chemotherapy impairs skeletal muscle mitochondrial homeostasis in early breast cancer patients

Joris Mallard et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the overall skeletal muscle mitochondrial state in early breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The results showed significant alterations in mitochondrial quantity, dynamics, and mitophagy during chemotherapy. These changes could explain the skeletal muscle deconditioning observed in breast cancer patients.

Exploring the metabolic fate of medium-chain triglycerides in healthy individuals using a stable isotope tracer

Suzan J. G. Knottnerus et al.

Summary: The study investigated the metabolic fates of MCT in healthy individuals using a C-13-labeled MCT tracer. Results showed that when provided as single energy source, 42% of MCT was converted to CO2, while in combination with carbohydrates and proteins in the diet, oxidation of MCT was higher at 62%. Furthermore, less than 1% of C-13-label was incorporated in LCFA in plasma, indicating that administered MCT underwent chain-elongation to LCT.

Muscle Fiber Type Transitions with Exercise Training: Shifting Perspectives

Daniel L. Plotkin et al.

Summary: Human muscle fibers are classified based on myosin heavy chain isoforms into slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibers, prevalent in different types of elite athletes. The ability of fibers to shift between hybrid and pure forms as well as slow and fast types is evident, although there are limitations in current evidence. Single fiber analysis is crucial for accurate identification of fiber types, especially in the presence of hybrid fibers.
