Dietary interventions on the prevention and management of diabetes in post-kidney transplantation - A systematic review

Joanne Li et al.

Summary: Post-transplant diabetes mellitus is associated with long-term immunosuppression and weight gain, but evidence on dietary interventions for prevention and management is limited. High-quality research with robust study designs is needed to further investigate the effectiveness of dietary interventions in post-kidney transplantation.

Recipient obesity as a risk factor in kidney transplantation

Uwe Scheuermann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of recipient obesity on the outcomes of patients undergoing primary kidney transplantation. The results showed that obesity was associated with an increased risk of surgical complications, longer hospital stays, and decreased graft survival. Therefore, appropriate risk information should be provided to obese patients before transplantation, and obesity-related complications should be considered after transplantation.

Vitamin D in Osteosarcopenic Obesity

Luigi Di Filippo et al.

Summary: Osteosarcopenic obesity is a clinical condition where low bone and muscle mass coexist in individuals with obesity. Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining musculoskeletal health and glucose homeostasis. However, there is limited clinical evidence to support the belief that vitamin D improves musculoskeletal health in individuals with osteosarcopenic obesity.

Association between Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: An Updated Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

Peyman Sarsangi et al.

Summary: Based on a systematic review and meta-analysis, the study found that the highest adherence to a Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with a reduced risk of diabetes. Each 1-score increase in the Mediterranean diet score was associated with a 3% decreased risk of diabetes. A nonlinear relationship was observed between the Mediterranean diet score and the risk of type 2 diabetes.

A qualitative exploration of the facilitators and barriers to self-management in kidney transplant recipients

Katherine E. Memory et al.

Summary: Understanding the behaviors that facilitate or impede self-management is crucial for improving health outcomes in kidney transplant recipients. This study conducted semi-structured interviews with UK kidney transplant recipients to explore their perceptions and experiences of self-management. The findings revealed facilitators such as knowledge acquisition, relationships with healthcare professionals, and support networks. Barriers included treatment complexity and adjusting to a new health status. Tailored interventions should focus on individualized goals, effective symptom management strategies, and emotional support from family and peers.

Summary: The study showed that females, older individuals, and those with higher education levels were more likely to have higher adherence scores to the Mediterranean diet. However, males, younger individuals, and those with lower education levels need to improve their diet for better adherence to the MD.

Intensive management of obesity in people with severe chronic kidney disease: A review

Richard Song et al.

Summary: This review evaluated the safety of intensive obesity treatments in people with end-stage kidney disease, finding limited data on very-low-energy diets but highlighting their potential efficacy and the need for close monitoring. Central acting obesity pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery in this population raised safety concerns, requiring further investigation.

Summary: After kidney transplantation, recipients experienced gains in muscle mass and strength, but the increase in fat mass outpaced muscle mass, resulting in persistent relative sarcopenia. Physical activity increased in the early months post-transplantation, but remained lower than controls.

Monica Dinu et al.

Summary: The study developed and validated a questionnaire called Medi-Lite to measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Results showed that adherence to the Mediterranean diet assessed through the Medi-Lite score was associated with abdominal obesity, with a significantly higher risk for patients with a score of <= 9.

Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Nutritional Status in Dalmatian Kidney Transplant Recipients-Are They Related?

Marijana Vuckovic et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate adherence to Mediterranean diet (MeDi) and its correlation with nutritional status parameters in Dalmatian kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Results showed low adherence to MeDi in Dalmatian KTRs, but it was associated with certain nutritional status parameters. MeDi may have beneficial effects on nutritional status in KTRs, but a structured nutritional approach is needed to enhance adherence and prevent potential adverse effects.
