CLIMATE CHANGE, INEQUALITY, AND HUMAN MIGRATION

Michal Burzynski et al.

Summary: This study investigates the long-term implications of climate change on global migration and inequality. The findings suggest that climate change intensifies global inequality and poverty, reinforces urbanization, and boosts migration from low- to high-latitude areas. The authors project that climate change will lead to the permanent relocation of 62 million working-age individuals over the 21st century. However, under current international migration laws and policies, only a small fraction of those affected by climate change is able to move beyond their homelands.

Tracing international migration in projections of income and inequality across the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways

Helene Benveniste et al.

Summary: The Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are five narratives of future development used for climate change research, projecting quantified socioeconomic variables like population, income levels, inequalities, and emissions over the 21st century. This study explicitly quantifies the effects of international migration on income levels and income inequality, showing that migration tends to make the world richer and decrease income inequality across countries and within most destination countries.

A theory of migration: the aspirations-capabilities framework

Hein de Haas

Summary: This paper introduces an aspirations-capabilities framework to explain human mobility as an intrinsic part of broader processes of social change, conceptualizing migration as a function of aspirations and capabilities within perceived geographical opportunity structures. It distinguishes between instrumental and intrinsic dimensions of human mobility, and explores how macro-structural changes shape people's migratory aspirations and capabilities. The resulting framework helps understand the complex ways in which social transformation and 'development' influence migration patterns.

Domestic and international migration intentions in response to environmental stress: A global cross-country analysis

Summary: The study finds that self-reported exposure to environmental stress increases individuals' intentions to migrate domestically and internationally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While domestic migration intentions are most affected, environmental stress particularly raises intraregional migration intentions.

The geography of climate migration

Michal Burzynski et al.

Summary: This study investigates the long-term effects of climate change on the mobility of working-age people using a world economy model. It predicts that 70-108 million workers will make mobility responses, with most movements being local or inter-regional. International migration responses vary, with South-North migration inducing a brain drain type response. Sea level changes mainly lead to forced local movements, while inter-regional and international movements are sensitive to temperature-related productivity changes.

Intergenerational Mobility of Immigrants in the United States over Two Centuries

Summary: Research shows that children of immigrants from almost every sending country have higher rates of upward mobility than children of the US-born. Immigrants achieve this advantage by settling in locations that offer better prospects for their children.
